A 62-year-old luddite says he’s been “forced into the 21st century” by his decision to run for Saskatoon city council.

“And I’m not happy about it,” said Robert Godfrey, a courier driver who recently bought a computer so he could fill out the online forms required for him to be registered as a candidate in Ward 2.

“I got it last week and it’s been a gong show ever since,” Godfrey said of the new machine.

This will be his third time running for election as the city councillor for Ward 2. He finished last in both 2009 and 2012, each time picking up less than five per cent of the vote.

Godfrey said he will continue to run as long as incumbent Coun. Pat Lorje is on the ballot. Lorje has been on city council for more than two decades. Godfrey said he believes councillors should not be allowed to hold office for more than three terms.

Despite his hatred of computers — he dislikes them so much that he asks his friends to turn their machines off if he goes to their homes — he said he doesn’t like door knocking and plans to run his whole campaign on social media with the help of a “computer geek.”

“I understand that the process is the more people you meet the better off you are,” he said. “I might go sit in parks if I have time, but, after driving in our city on our streets, the way it goes, by the end of the day I’ve had enough. I try not to go anywhere or do anything.”

If elected, Godfrey said he would cut city management, remove Christmas and Easter from the list of civic statutory holidays — “nobody should pay for anyone’s religion, nor should people be penalized for being religious” — and ensure that Uber “thieves” are subject to the same rules and regulations as taxi drivers.

Godfrey is joined on the Ward 2 ballot by Lorje, Hilary Gough, Vernon Linklater and Mark Zielke.

He wants to represent the people, except he isn't a people person, and really doesn't like to be around, um people.
