MCINTOSH, Ala. (WPMI) - A 12-year-old Calvert boy was arrested Thursday evening after investigators say his shot his own mother in the back at close range. He told authorities that he shot her because he "didn't want to go to school."

While most of his classmates spent Friday afternoon at a pep rally at McIntosh High School, the 12-year-old spent his day at the Washington County courthouse. Authorities say he shot his mother at their home in Calvert Thursday around 5 p.m.

He was just two feet away from her when pulled the trigger, officials claimed. His mother barely survived the attack.

"He and his mother got into an argument about him going to school," said Washington County Sheriff Richard Stringer, "he then turned and went into the bedroom where there was a 12-guage shotgun, he removed the shotgun from the bedroom, walked back into the house where his mother was and shot her in the back…normally, when you get shot at that close of a range, you don't normally survive."

The boy's mother was rushed to the hospital and is currently listed in "stable" condition. Her son is currently being held at a detention facility.

According to the sheriff, the 12-year-old won't be charged as an adult and he doesn't have a criminal record.

Bracelet Brown said he is in her daughter's class.

"He's quiet," she said, "she doesn't have any problems with him."
