A Georgia teen who starred at basketball died from his injuries in a “jump the car” game, his mother said.
Kobe Thomas, 16, died Sunday, two days after he was struck by a car.
Thomas had been playing a dangerous game called “jump the car” with his friends when he was struck, causing a severe brain injury, his mother said.
“Apparently you gotta a person in the car that’s driving towards you, it’s a timing thing,” Demetria Almond told WSB-TV. “And of course a leaping thing or jumping thing and you jump over the car.”
Police are continuing to investigate the deadly collision.
Thomas, a junior, had attended Model High School since the beginning of the year. He was previously at Pepperell Schools since the fourth grade. Thomas had also attended the Floyd County College and Career Academy, an institution that provides opportunities for students to acquire technological skills.
“So you see, this has affected three school bodies,” Tim Hensley, assistant to the superintendent at Floyd County Schools, told the Daily News.
Hensley said that Thomas was a popular student that had “an infectious smile.”
Model High School Basketball Coach Jacob Travis was excited to have Thomas play for his team.
“he was beyond expectations, above expectations, so he was a special kid,” Travis told Fox station WAGA-TV.
The school was on Fall break during the incident, and many students were emotional when they received the news.
Extra councilors and staff had been brought in to help students cope with their lost.
Hensley said that Thomas was a hard -worker both in the classroom and on the basketball court.
