Women are behind more misogyny on social media than men, and dominate usage of insults including “slut”, “bitch” and “whore”, a study has revealed.

Extensive analysis of a sample of 19million tweets over the past several years found that women account for 52% of misogynistic insults online.

Further number-crunching revealed that they are far more likely than men to use certain insults.

Terms of abuse most likely to be used by women focused on appearance and sexual promiscuity. “Slut”, “hoe”, “bitch”, “whore” and “ugly” were all used more by women than men – some by a margin of almost 20 points:

The only term significantly more likely to be used by men was “cunt” – a term used by more than twice as many men than women.

While the insult is probably the most forceful in the English language, it is also non-specific, only really connoting that the user does not like the recipient.

The insights came from a study of online abuse by the charity Ditch the Label, which published its full report this morning.

It also included a large segment on masculinity – particularly “toxic masculinity”.

However, it concluded that 90% of discussion of masculinity online is completely benign:

The most common reaction to what the authors term “non-conformity” was “neutral” (33%), followed closely by “supporting” (32%).

All of the “negative” response types added together – including some like “persuading” and “disappointed” which don’t really sound very toxic – add up to only 10% of total responses.
