Low cost airline Ryanair is to charge passengers a fee to check in more than four days before departure.

The change means holidaymakers returning to the UK more than four days after their departure – for example, those going away for a week – will need to check in online from abroad to avoid paying a charge.

The good news is, the change comes into force on November 1 - after the half term beak - meaning parents going abroad won't have to cough up.

Ryanair says, if you pay for a seat, you can check in for free up to 30 days before flying. This current rule isn't changing.

If you don't pay for a seat, however, you can currently check in for free between two hours and seven days before departure. From Tuesday 1 November, this is changing to between two hours and four days before departure.

Ryanair’s Kenny Jacobs said: “We’re continuing to listen to our customers through our “Always Getting Better” programme and this change reflects the customer feedback we have received.

"From 1st November, we’re offering those customers who wish to reserve seats more time to choose their preferred seat, by reducing the check-in window from 7 to 4 days pre-departure for those customers who prefer a random seat.

"Customers who do not wish to reserve their seat will be able to check-in between 4 days and 2 hours ahead of their departure, using both the Ryanair.com website and Ryanair mobile app, and will continue to be randomly allocated a seat, free of charge."

A seat costs from £4-£15 per person – those that don't book in advance, will be allocated a seat at random- meaning it's unlikely you'll be placed next to any of your travel companions.

The airline says it's shaving three days off the free check-in window because it believes this will "increase the choice available" to customers who opt to pay for reserved seats by giving them a greater time frame in which to choose.

The change will apply to all Ryanair passengers, including those who've already booked a flight for after 1 November.

Travellers that opt to pay on the day, will be billed a hefty £45 per person, per flight – that's £180 for a family of four.

It's a free for all, if you travel as a family and don't pre book you could be spread over the plane, it's a low cost airline and for the sake of £12 each way it's best to pre book
