Bridget D. Caplin, a 41-year-old former employee of Plymouth-Canton Community Schools in Metro Detroit, is accused of an illegal sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy
Caplin, who's currently jailed on a $50,000 bond in Wayne County, is charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct, punishable by up to 15 years in prison; distributing obscene material to children, punishable by up to two years in prison; and using a computer to commit a crime; punishable by up to four years in prison.
Police received a tip in May 2015 that Caplin was exchanging photos and engaged in other illegal sexual behavior with "some younger kids who happened to be friends with her daughters," Plymouth Police Chief Al Cox said.
Cox said the tip initially came anonymously through a tipline website based in California.
The tip said Caplin was engaging in "oral sex with minors and buying them alcohol."
Police notified administrators who immediately placed Caplin, an employee at East Middle School, on paid leave while the investigation proceeded.
"The employee is no longer employed with the school district and has not returned to any school buildings since the original allegations were brought forth last spring," the school district said in a prepared statement. "The District always places the health, safety, and welfare of its students as its number one priority, and will continue to do so as the prosecutor's office completes its investigation."
Cox said an extensive investigation that involved issuing subpoenas for cell phone and online data commenced. So far, only one victim has been identified. Police arrested Caplin Oct. 14.
"It's possible there could be other victims," the chief said, but "we don't have evidence right now that we could produce to say that there are."
The victim's father told reporter Aaron Baskerville of WXYZ-TV, Channel 7 News, Caplin and his son exchanged sexually explicit pictures and she gave him oral sex in a church parking lot.
"I'm sure my son is not the only one being taken advantage of," the anonymous father told Channel 7 News. "Reverse the roles. If it was a male paraprofessional and a female student, all hell would have broken loose."
Caplin is schedule to appear for a preliminary examination hearing Nov. 7.
