Skateboarding and climbing are Olympic bound, so why not fishing?

BBC reports the Confederation Internationale de la Peche Sportive is trying to hook the International Olympic Committee on a catch and release event for the Tokyo Games in 2020.

Several other sports are vying for podium time at the games because the IOC is after innovative ways to draw in a younger audience. Surfing, baseball, and softball round out the five extra events in Tokyo so far.

The Confederation, whose goal is to promote all activities in touch with fishing from a sporting point of view, says fishing’s ancient system is fair and competitive as a sport. It’s unclear what the target species would be.

Critics claim it’s boring to watch and will rely too much on luck.

Anglers unofficially reached Olympic heights in the Paris games, but that was back in 1900 and no winner was recorded.

Skateboarding and climbing require athleticism, will poker be next?

Fair point, but it requires skill. I feel like fishing is more luck.

I agree that it shouldn't be an Olympic sport, but I've watched some fishing pros on the Outdoor channel and as long as there's fish in the water to catch, it's definitely not luck for those guys.

I fish, and my son consistently catches more than me, but it just seems like a "carp shoot"

How silly.

Good that skateboarding is going in though, Olympics need to capture a younger crowd and it's a fantastic sport to watch. I've never skated but watching it during the X-games is incredible. Kids are doing moves now at 14 that Tony Hawk invented at the peak of his career.

My friend is a pro female skater, the hardest part about getting g skating in the Olympics is they didn't think anyone e could test negative for weed

Well if snowboarders have done it in the Winter games almost without issue ( *cough* Rebagliati), maybe the skaters can do it too?

It takes a lot of skill to not fall out of the boat after 8 hours with a cooler of beer.
