DUBOIS - A photo of a hamburger from the DuBois Area School District has created quite the buzz on social media.

The photo was posted on a Facebook page called DuBoisLive on Monday. It had nearly 400 comments from people questioning if the burger is safe to eat.

Superintendent Dr. Luke Lansberry of DASD said the reason the burger looked unappetizing was because it was overcooked.

He said out of the 300 burgers they served that day, there was only one complaint.

"Food service workers cooked the hamburgers at 170 degrees, when typically they are only required to cook at 155 degrees," Lansberry said. "There's a pretty good chance that hamburger was overcooked and a lot of the internal ingredients surfaced from that level of heat."

But as a precaution, Lansberry said the cafeteria will no longer accept this type of hamburger.

"Our food service director has contacted the state and told them about the situation and made it clear we will no longer accept that product in the district, just to make sure that we have good quality food," Lansberry said.

DASD's cafeteria is overseen by Metz Culinary Management.

A call to their office for the burger's ingredients was not returned.

Lansberry said DASD recently received an excellent rating on their health inspection of food services.

"It's something we'll learn from and overcome and I have 100 percent confidence in the food service staff here that work hard to make great food for all of us," Lansberry said.

School officials said they hope students and parents will use this incident as a learning lesson. If they have a problem with their school lunch, they should contact the food service workers so they can address the problem immediately.
