Sounds dangerous/interesting - what is it that you do?

Boilermaker. This was in a power generating station that burns coal. It's an older plant, built in the 50s. They use it mostly for back up during extreme temps and / or when another plant in the system is down for maintenance or repair.
It can be dangerous but it's mostly just dirty and rough. I've been in it for over 20 years and still enjoy it. Just wish my health would cooperate.
The coal dust and ash has me all stuffed up today. I wore a dust mask most of the time I was there but I'm still sniffling.

Reminds me of seeing my dad's worksite as a kid.

He was a fitter welder / welding engineer and was known in the shop as "the impossibilist" - 'the man who can figure out how to adhere 2 metals who really shouldn't adhere in the first place' (or so a plaque he got from work once read!)

Before I was born he got hazard pay for scrambling up scaffolding and making the metal structure that drive-in movie screens were built out of. He also designed a 24' overhang at a mall - without having to have anything touch the ground.

Its like a mini motel room! Do you have to share it, when your not there?

The Monk

No - when I moved here I put that as a stipulation. I would not share or I would stay at the site where I was.... They agreed.,

Thats good! You need your own space, and it would be a pain to clean it out every week or two.

That's why the TV is supplied and the cupboards lockable both sides of it....but I've got too much stuff to keep putting it away.

The last site I left behind my TV, TV stand, desk with hitch and office chair....would fit here.

What kind of mine?

It's a gold mine called King of the Hills....

The first pic shows the old mill processing plant that closed in Sept 2004 when the place was an open pit mine and the pit wall collapsed....(I was there then too...)

The second pit shows the new portal where we are going underground to mine underneath the old pit.

Plug this into Google Earth's search box:

28°40'19.92" S 121°10'33.75" E

Go close in for a look and you can see the slip - about 10 Million ton of rock slipped....

My office, not a current pic, but it is me....This is what I do for a living, along with repairing body and frame work.

There are two gold mines near me. Both have been inactive for several years, but one is gearing up again. They've bee drilling & doing some kind of magnetic surveys by helicoptor and buying up land like crazy.

You in the trade too Cactus?

I think the US guys still use solvent based base-coats, the water based base-coats we have to use are down to those bastards in Brussels :x

No sir, It's not mandatory yet in FL. PPG has been hounding us to switch over but we've declined until we have to. But get this, you have to be "licensed" now to spray in certain counties of FL. Get a Certified painter certificate through a school or 3 hour seminar. Basically it's knowing what VOC's are and how to clean your gun after you spray and disposing of solvents. All this does is takes liability from shop owner if EPA or Fire Marshal comes into shop and sees a painter spraying primer or anything else (More than 3 ounces) with VOC's outside of the booth. $1,000 - $10,000 fine... You can't even clean your gun buy blowing thinner through it, you have to break it down and wash it or put it in a gun cleaner.

I think California is the only state that it's Mandatory to use Waterborne paints.

With gold at over $1400 an ounce now, a lot of old mines are worth revisiting.....
