As Tennessee battles raging wildfires, forcing an evacuation of thousands of people, a number of people on Twitter are mocking their plight, suggesting residents there deserve it for voting for Donald Trump.
Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, the epicenter of the wildfires because of their proximity to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, are popular holiday resorts for conservative and Christian families from the region. The towns have a number of attractions and wholesome family activities, including Dollywood.
Some of the tweets, instead of expressing horror, are declaring “let them burn” and “too bad it’s not the whole state burning.” The tweeters are also accusing residents of showing their “white privilege” because they want more news coverage of the fires.

Another user implied that the Tennessee people had it coming because they voted for a candidate that is not on-board with progressive climate change policies:

Michael Ian Black, a popular left-wing comedian and producer, also weighed in on the issue, jokingly saying: “When Trump supporters voted to ‘burn it all down,’ I bet they didn’t think it would start with Tennessee.”
This sparked a wave of attacks for being insensitive, forcing him to delete the tweet and apologize.

Meanwhile, other Twitter users blamed residents in the state for “white privilege mourning” and “crying bout some burnt trees and buildings.”
A Twitter user, who goes by the name Resilient Rebel, claimed “White privilege/white supermacists (sic) will rebuild your ever so awesome town back. That’s all y’all keep whining about.” She has since set her profile to private, possibly due to backlash.
