First, I should say that the driver lived. He’s in critical condition, but hopefully he’ll pull through. That said, the guy’s an idiot, and all of this was preventable by just being slightly less of an idiot. How? Maybe by not driving like a fool on a public highway while livestreaming video of said foolishness before losing control and ramming a dump truck. Just spitballing.

Turnto10News reports the driver was 20-year-old Onasi Olio-Rojas from Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and for some reason he decided to film himself driving his Honda Civic at speeds of up to 114 mph on a crowded stretch of Route 6, weaving in and out of traffic, making some near-miss passes at speed, and driving on the shoulder.

As you can see, most of the video is of him driving, mouthing song lyrics, making faces, inspecting his own ability to move his tongue, and, while not the most scintillating of live videos, shows he’s just as much of a dork when alone in his car as anyone. Except he’s got one hand on his phone live-streaming his own face while he’s driving 110+ mph in traffic, which, again, is idiotic and dangerous and for fuck’s sake why are you doing this, you idiot?

Olio-Rojas lost control of his Civic, because of course he did, and ended up spinning out, hitting a dump truck, and then crashing into the Jersey barrier. The live-streamed video ends just before he lost control of the car.

According to the Providence Journal, traffic was backed up for two hours as emergency crews had to use the Jaws of Life to open the roof of the Civic like a herring tin to get him out. Police did not detect any “signs of impaired driving” at the scene, but I suspect an analysis of the drivers blood will show elevated levels of stupid.

Driving fast is amazing. You love it, I love it, deep down, everybody does. But do it on a track, and for fuck’s sake, don’t do it in traffic, and for double-fuck’s sake, don’t Facebook-live yourself doing it.

Come on, people. This is the kind of shit that’s going to make human driving illegal when the robots come. We have to be better.
