JEREMY CORBYN has said the Labour Party will put down an official amendment to the Article 50 bill.

The Labour leader made the comments to Sky News.

In Parliament, an amendment is a change to a proposed law and alterations to bills must be discussed and voted.

The Government is currently appealing a High Court ruling which said Theresa May must allow Article 50 to be debated in parliament.

Downing Street wanted the PM to trigger the EU exit clause, but Remainers fought that in court.

Mr Corbyn said his interventions from the oppostition will be around access to the single market and protections.

Speaking ahead of meetings in the Czech Republic he said: “We are respecting the result of the referendum, it might not be the one we wanted but it is the one we’ve got.”

The Tory party is hoping to draft a bill which is unammendable - being just a few lines long.

But the Labour leader said he is determined to ensure Labour has its say.

Mr Corbyn said there “should” be an alteration which guarantees access to the EU single market despite Brussels insisting any market access will mean Britain has to accept other EU agreements, including freedom of movement.

Brexiteers largely argue against this as immigration played such a huge role in the vote.

Experts have suggested Mr Corbyn’s popularity may increase as a result of his intervention.

However, those opposed to him are likely to be infuriated as any attempt to amend the bill will delay it, possibly for week or months while details are ironed out.

A decision over whether there needs to be a parliament vote on the triggering of Article 50 will be released by the Supreme Court at the earliest in mid-January.

Mrs May's plan of kicking off divorce proceedings in March is therefore looking increasingly unlikely.
