Marvel superhero blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy grossed nearly $800 million worldwide but some cried sexism over the female orphan assassin Gamora played by Zoe Saldana.
Now the trailer for the Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which also stars Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper has dropped and social justice warriors aren’t happy that Gamora doesn’t get to utter a killer quip in the two-and-a-quarter minute trailer.
Leading the charge is The Daily Dot which fumed that Gamora was treated in the trailer as a “non-entity”. Gavia Baker-Whitelaw wrote: “Gamora gets no dialogue at all, and her most significant role is to be the long-suffering object of Star-Lord’s affections. Basically, Gamora’s job is to be The Girl.
“The trailer introduces a new female character (Mantis, played by Pom Klementieff), but she’s just there to highlight Star-Lord’s feelings for Gamora in a scene where two male characters get to be funny while Gamora remains silent…unfortunately for James Gunn and any fans of Gamora, this is how Marvel Studios decided to market Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2: as a film about four funny, quirky male characters, and a forgettable woman who doesn’t speak.”
Will SJWs be eating their words come the film’s release next May, just as they did with Moana recently?
