A women's group has slammed a taxi firm's "antiquated" and "derogatory" ad campaign which "fat-shames" and "age-shames" older women.

Put out by CityFox, the offending posters have been spotted around Bristol and appear to be targeting drunken men who may be suffering from the "beer-goggle" effect.

The ads, which feature an older, overweight model with her finger in her mouth, urge potential customers to call CityFox if they find the woman attractive.

The poster states: "If I start to look sexy book a taxi. Don't make bad decisions because you have had one too many!"

Female-run organisation, Bristol Women's Voice (BWV), claim that the campaign reinforces harmful gender stereotypes and should be taken down.

CityFox claim that campaign was designed to make people think about safety when drinking and has refused to apologise for "using humour" to highlight the issue.

A similar advert targeting women and featuring a man was also rolled out. Both adverts have since been withdrawn, although several flyers featuring the female model were still on display across the city yesterday.

Chair of BWV, Penny Gane, said: "Bristol Women's Voice is appalled to see this advert being used by City Fox Taxis in central Bristol. Images such as this are antiquated and reinforce harmful gender stereotypes and messages that women are to be judged by their physical appearance alone as well as being fat- and age-shaming.

"It is unacceptable for businesses to use derogatory and sexist images especially when targeting younger audiences, this should be seen as an opportunity to present modern images that challenge harmful stereotypes and present a broad range of representations that young people can relate to.

"Whilst we would of course endorse the message of keeping safe, this advert assumes that all students will be drinking heavily and looking for 'sexy' women. The advert is aimed at men, and normalises and encourages this behaviour."

The group is now asking City Fox to sign up to its Zero Tolerance initiative to reduce sexual violence and abuse against men and women across Bristol, which is often linked to the drinking culture.

Sounds to me like the BWV need to go on diets and attend Masquerade balls.
