Authorities said Tuesday that a suspicious package that had a Cedar Rapids school and daycare center on lockdown last week was a bag of sex toys.

Greg Buelow, Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman, confirmed to the Register in an email Tuesday that police were called to the Cedar Rapids Day School last week when "a bag full of several items" were left on a bench outside of the daycare. The items on Tuesday were determined to be adult sex toys, Buelow wrote.

A pedestrian notified police around noon last Tuesday about the package, per a story from Cedar Rapids Gazette. Law enforcement and emergency crews responded to the scene, which included a Special Response Team, K-9 unit and a bomb-detecting robot. The package was then removed from the site around 1:30 p.m.

"The reason why anyone would leave them at that location is unknown," Buelow wrote to the Register.

About 70 children were inside the daycare center during the investigation, staying in the basement of the building, Cedar Rapids police Sgt. J.D. Verschoore told the Gazette. By 2 p.m., parents were able to take their children home once the scene was clear, the Gazette said.

Other businesses near the daycare center were notified of the investigation, but were not on lockdown, Verschoore said.

Buelow said Tuesday that the pedestrian who reported the package “absolutely did the right thing,” the Gazette said, and that the adult toys have been disposed of.
