The Women’s March on Washington, which has expelled a pro-life feminist group on Monday for their stance on abortion after feminist media complaints, has a partnership with another anti-abortion group — The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).
The march’s organizers released a statement on Monday, claiming “The Women’s March’s platform is pro-choice and that has been our stance from day one.” The statement also said that including an “anti-choice” organization was an “error”. It added: “We look forward to marching on behalf of individuals who share the view that women deserve the right to make their own reproductive decisions.”
Yet while the organizers claim that only pro-choice groups are allowed to partner with the march on January 21, one day after Donald Trump’s inauguration, the march maintains its ties with anti-abortion Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).
Back in 2000, CAIR slammed the Supreme Court ruling that a state law banning partial birth abortions is unconstitutional. The court ruled 5-4 that the prohibition placed an “undue burden” on a woman’s right to reproductive rights.
The Islamic advocacy group released a statement dated June 28, 2000 in response to the ruling: “A procedure in which a child is intentionally killed in the birth canal can only be described as infanticide. It is astounding that the court would allow a doctor to pull a defenseless child from its mother’s womb, pierce its skull and suck out its brain. A society that allows this vicious and inhuman practice would have a difficult time calling itself ‘civilized.'”
“More than 1400 years ago, the Quran, Islam’s revealed text, prohibited the practice of female infanticide. The Quran describes Resurrection Day, when a murdered child will be able to testify to its innocence and ‘is asked for what crime she was killed,” the statement continued.
“It is sad that the Supreme Court would have us return to that pre-Islamic period of ignorance.”
A spokesperson for CAIR confirmed to Heat Street the authenticity of the statement from 2000. He told us that while CAIR doesn’t take a stance on abortion due to a variety of views in the Islamic community, the so-called partial-birth abortion “is not in the same category as regular abortions.”
After asking whether the group would take the same stance today, the spokesperson didn’t deny the position and went on offense, asking: “Read the statement and see what you think, you disagree with that statement?”
After repeated questions whether the group still shares the same position, a representative of CAIR abruptly ended the call.
Partial birth abortion remains a contested topic in the US, however, feminists such as Jessica Valenti, the leading voice behind removing pro-life feminist group New Wave Feminists on Monday has once blasted the term “partial birth abortion”, tweeting: “There is no such thing as partial birth abortion this is not a medical term.”
Heat Street has approached the Women’s March On Washington asking for a comment and whether any actions will be taken in relation to the Council on American Islamic Relations.
