Immigrants in Holland have been warned by the Dutch prime minister to integrate or leave the country.
In what is being seen as an attempt to appear at least as robust on immigration as his anti-Islamic opponents, the normally liberal Mark Rutte has raised the stakes ahead of the Dutch election on March 15 by writing in a full-page advertisement in national newspapers saying that he understands why some citizens want those who refuse to integrate to live elsewhere.
Rutte wrote: “I have that feeling, too. Behave normally or go away. Leave, you don’t have to be here. People who don’t want to adapt, who attack gay people, who shout at women in short skirts or call ordinary Dutch people racist.”
He also criticised the Dutch rights institute, which recently ruled in support of a Muslim jobseeker who was refused work as a bus driver because he would not shake women’s hands – apparently for religious reasons. Rutte said the decision was “bizarre”.
Rutte’s main opponent is Geert Wilders, leader of the right-wing Freedom Party.
Recent polls suggest that Wilders is polling above 30 per cent, leaving Rutte a few points behind.
Wilders is regarded as a hero to many following his conviction last year for hate speech over his attacks on Muslim immigrants. At the weekend Wilders said at a conference of far-right European leaders in Koblenz, Germany: “Ordinary people are afraid to speak their minds. Women are afraid. Women with blonde hair are afraid to let it be seen.”
