A government official has urged civil servants in the UK to stop eating cake at work – because it’s a “public health hazard”.

Liza Pawlowska, launched an attack on “office cake culture” and told her colleagues to lay off the treats.

Citing a warning from the BBC, she said excessive cake consumption could could be damaging the workforce and weekly cake events should be replaced with alternative non-sugary snacks – and only be “every once in a while”.

She suggested cake was unfair on colleagues with poor self-control, and also made a special mention of Muslim civil servants fasting for Ramadan.

The intervention, published on the UK Government’s website as part of a wellbeing initiative, caused an uproar in the tabloid press.

Included alongside the article was a photograph of a delicious sponge cake covered with a patronising red “no” sign:

A tweet promoting the post asked: “Could you office cake culture be a public health hazard?”

The message struck a nerve in the psyche of Great Britain, where cake-eating is tantamount to a national religion – as seen in the enduring popularity of TV shows like The Great British Bake-Off.

Baking metaphors work their way into all aspects of British society – including Government policy. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson frequently plays with the phrase “you can’t have your cake and eat it” – declaring famously “my policy on cake is pro having it and pro eating it”.

Pawlowska’s advice was quickly rejected by Government ministers, one of whom defiantly said he would keep his office cake tradition alive.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister – a keen baker herself – said she is “all in favour of cake”.

We have fatties who whine in our office when there's a bake sale or treats are brought in that "throw off their diet." Bitch those three cupcakes didn't sweep the leg and dive down your gullet, don't blame the food, blame your own giggly ass.
