AN AUSTRALIAN senator and TV presenter became embroiled in a fiery clash in a debate about Sharia law.

Jacqui Lambie and Yassmin Abdel-Magied got into a shouting match on ABC’s Q&A after the politician said all Muslims who support Sharia law should be deported from Australia.

Activist Abdel-Magied, one of the founders of youth-empowerment group Youth Without Borders, blasted the Ms Lambie before insisting Islam “is the most feminist religion”.

“Anybody that supports Sharia law in this country should be deported,” said the Tasmania senator, before author and commentator interrupted.

“Do you know what Sharia law is? Me praying five times a day is Sharia,” Abdel-Magied fired back.

“I’m not going to attack you personally but my frustration is that people talk about Islam without knowing anything about it.

“And they’re willing to completely negate any of my rights as a human being, as a woman, as a person with agency, simply because they have an idea about what my faith is about.

“Excuse me, Islam to me is the most feminist religion.”

At that point, Abdel-Magied was heckled by an audience member, but she carried on with her rant.

She said: “We got equal rights well before the Europeans, we don’t take our husband’s last names because we ain’t their property. We were given the right to own land.

“The fact is, what is culture is separate from what is faith and the fact that people go around dissing my faith without knowing anything about it and want to chuck me out of a country.”

Ms Lambie then cut in and administered a blow to the cheers of audience members.

She said: “The fact is there’s one law in this country and it is the Australian law, it is not Sharia law – not in this country! Not in my day.”

Abdel-Magied responded and insisted “in Sharia it says you follow the law of the land on which you are on”.

The pair then continued to shout over each other before the host was forced to intervene.
