Argentinian feminists staged a mock abortion on a woman dressed as the Virgin Mary near a Cathedral as part of an International Women’s Day protest.

A photograph has appeared depicting mask-wearing feminists performing the fake termination. Blood and body parts gush from between the “Virgin Mary’s” legs. She holds a fist in the air and smiles while wearing a rosary around her neck, LifeSiteNews reported.

The extreme performance art, which took place last week, was circulated on social media. Argentinian Archbishop in Tucuman, Alfredo Zecca, has condemned it.

Activist group Pan y Rosas (“Bread and Roses”) circulated a Facebook post defending the performance and the woman who staged it.

Another feminist group, Socorro Rosa Tucuman, also celebrated and defended the image on Facebook, claiming the woman dressed as the Virgin Mary aborted “patriarchy” and “forced heterosexuality.” Following the uproar, however, the group removed the post. Pan y Rosas expressed its support with the Socorro Rosa group.

Maureen Ferguson of The Catholic Association told the site: “”It is with great sadness that we read about this highly offensive protest in Argentina.” He added that it’s “gravely disrespectful” to mock the religion of billions of people.

“It is also highly ironic for a feminist march protesting femicide to advocate for the right to take human lives, including the lives of female babies. Annually, about 25 million little girls are aborted worldwide.”

March for Life President Jeanne Mancini also told LifeSiteNews that the feminist act is “symbolic of the painful confusion in our culture regarding the inherent dignity and vocation of woman. In particular, it shows a deep misunderstanding and lack of appreciation that a woman’s capacity for motherhood is a beautiful gift to be treasured, not a liability and not a right either.”

“This act also shows what is at the foundation of the hard-core pro-abortion people,” Pavone added. “They hate the church, and they literally want to abort Jesus off the face of the earth in every manifestation of his presence today.”

During the Women’s Day protests last week in the Argentinian capital, Bueno Aires, demonstrators also tried to set the city’s cathedral on fire. A lone man holding a Vatican flag who was trying to defend the cathedral was attacked.

“I believe more of this persecution will occur the more the Church stands against the sin of pre-born child killing,” said a priest associate at Priests for Life, Father Stephen Imbarrato.
