A 16-year-old boy in the US will be brought out of his medically induced coma today after he survived a light plane crash that killed both his father and stepmother.

It is the second time the teenager has survived a fatal air crash — that last time he lost his mother and two siblings.

High school student Austin Hatch, from Indiana, was on board the light plane flying to the family's summer home when it crashed nose-first into a garage near an airport in Michigan.

His high school basketball coach Dan Kline told the Detroit Free Press that doctors plan to bring the teenager out of his coma on Monday.

The family took off from Smith Field airport in a single engine plane — piloted by his father, Dr Stephen Hatch — at about 5.45pm local time on Friday.

The plane was headed for Boyne Falls but diverted to Charlevoix, for an unknown reason, according to US aviation authorities. Boyne Falls is about 48km southwest of Charlevoix, a luxury resort town on Lake Michigan.

At about 8pm, the 1975 Beech A36 fixed-wing plane plummeted nose-first into a garage on a residential street just north of Charlevoix Municipal Airport.

Witnesses told Petoskeynews.com the plane's engine kept cutting out before it ploughed into the garage.

One witness, who was working in a restaurant not far from where the plane crashed, said "the whole back end of the plane was broken off, and debris was everywhere".

The teen was taken to a nearby hospital in a critical condition.

Austin is a star basketball player who just recently accepted a basketball scholarship at the University of Michigan.

Austin was just eight-years-old when he and his father were involved in a fatal plane crash that claimed the lives of his mother Julie and two siblings Lindsay and Ian in 2003.

The newspaper reports that the Austin's father owns a flight instruction school and has been a pilot since 1997.

A preliminary report on the crash will be issued within two weeks, investigators said.

Wow how do you deal with that, not only has he gone through 2 air crashes but he lost 5 members of family, heartwrenching.

This might be insensitive but was the boy's father also the pilot of the first crash in 2003?

:-k

Looks like he was.

DETROIT (AP) — An Indiana doctor killed in a plane crash in northern Michigan had a passion for flying that propelled him back into the cockpit after a crash that killed his wife and two children nearly eight years ago, a colleague and close friend said.

I think there are some people who you should never fly or float with, these two are definitely examples of that!!
