A NEW SKYSCRAPER has been designed unlike anything seen before – with lifts that can bend around corners and travel in continuous loops.

A new design has been unveiled for a New York skyscraper like no other.

Dubbed the Big Bend, the architectural marvel is a one-of-a-kind looped tower that would have the accolade of being the longest building in not only the United States, but the world.

Its unusual shape means it would incorporate a lift system able to travel around the curve at the top.

The concept is the brainchild of design studio Olio, which wanted to create a building that would truly stand out in Manhattan’s iconic skyline – and get past zoning laws.

Olio says on its website: “New York city’s zoning laws have created a peculiar set of tricks through which developers try to maximise their property’s height in order to infuse it with the prestige of a high rise structure.

“But what if we substituted height with length?

“What if our buildings were long instead of tall?

“If we manage to bend our structure instead of bending the zoning rules of New York we would be able to create one of the most prestigious buildings in Manhattan. The longest building in the world.”

The building would be located on the area of 57th Street known as Billionaire’s Row – home to a number of ultra-luxury residential skyscrapers.

According to Olio, there is a new appetite for slender skyscrapers in Manhattan that the Big Bend would tap into.

The 4,000ft-long tower is designed to loop over at the top in a giant upside-down U shape.

This requires a lift system the likes of which has never been built before.

Olio said: “What was once considered to be the greatest challenge in elevator history, is finally becoming reality: the elevator that can travel in curves, horizontally and in continuous loops.

“The innovative track changing system allows for the horizontal connection of two shafts on the top and bottom to create a continuous loop.”

The team added: “The Big Bend can become a modest architectural solution to the height limitations of Manhattan.

“We can now provide our structures with the measurements that will make them stand out without worrying about the limits of the sky.”

Not a traditional elevator and it doesn't go completely up and over the arch and back down the other side.

Is that even possible?

That's sweet, I can't wait to see it. Been waiting for some real cool innovative architecture in North American skylines for too long! This is some 21st century shit.
