A man who worked as a steward at Manchester United soccer club for 29 years was forced out of his job because he called a female colleague “love”.

Vince Miller, 82, quit after the hostess complained he put his arm around her at a match and used the harmless term of affection, which is regarded as standard language in England.

Mr Miller was popular with fans and would interview retired players on match days as a compère in the club’s corporate suites.

But he confirmed to the Sun he has ‘retired with dignity’ following the complaint last September.

A source told the paper: ‘He’s an old-school gentleman who’s been working for the club for as long as people can remember and absolutely adores his job. He is devastated at losing it and no-one can believe the club has treated such a lovely old guy in this manner.’

A Manchester United spokesman said: ‘All of our lounges receive feedback from fans that enjoy the facilities on match day. As a result of the feedback we received in the Old Boardroom over a period of time, we have changed the offering to supporters in that room and part of that change has meant a change in room host.’
