A man was mauled to death by his own pet dog while being interviewed for a documentary produced by the BBC.

Mario Perivoitos, from North London, was set upon by his Staffordshire bull terrier last week (the photograph above is a file picture of a different dog).

According to reports the dog, named Major, pounced on his owner and bit him on the neck. The animal was wrestled off him, but Perivoitos died hours later.

A BBC film crew was present during the attack, though Perivoitos is not thought to have been on camera during the savage incident.

Photographs published by MailOnline show ambulance staff battling to save Perivoitos after the attack, which took place on March 20.

A post-mortem investigation found that Perivoitos died of massive blood loss from a wound to the neck, which officials said was consistent with a dog bite.

The BBC has admitted that its staff were present – though, in a statement to The Guardian, officials declined to name the project they were working on.

Police said they seized the dog after the attack and have placed it in a secure kennel while they decide whether it needs to be killed.

Staffordshire bull terriers are known to turn violent and have been responsible for human deaths many times before.

However, unlike some potentially dangerous dog breeds, keeping them as pets is not prohibited by British law.
