A district supervisor in Bayview, San Francisco has accused a company advertising a luxury apartment complex of “asinine” cultural appropriation for saying the area will become “the new Mission”, forcing the firm to pull the commercial.

The advertisement by Waterbend Apartments, which caused district supervisor Malia Cohen to publicly attack it, encourages people to live in its new complex. It reads: “Come grow with us as Bayview becomes the new Mission.” The bottom of the ad says “urban living at its best.”

According to Cohen’s Facebook post, the ad is cultural appropriation. She wrote: “‘Disrespectful’ does not even begin to describe the asinine mistake that Waterbend Apartments made when they released this ad for new apartments in the Bayview to the public.

“I would politely advise Waterbend Apartments, and their ad consulting team, to take a step back and get a firm understanding of the word “columbusing.” You are not “discovering” the Bayview and the culture has been here. #facts”

She claims the phrase “urban living at its best” is “cultural appropriation at its worst”. The district supervisor added: “What on earth could you possibly mean by ‘Grow With Us as Bayview Becomes The Next Mission’?! The Mission is ground-zero for aggressive tech gentrification. Points for transparency on what you thought your plans were for our neighborhood. Dog-whistles and coded language are so 2016.”

After Cohen’s rant, Waterbend Apartments has announced it will be pulling the commercial, Hoodline.com reported.

A Waterbend spokesperson also released a statement claiming the company “regrets if we have offended members of the community with our recent advertising”.
