A former IT worker at a Houston middle school was arrested this week after authorities said he had impregnated a student at the school.
Mauricio Orlando Mendoza, 37, was booked into the Harris County jail Wednesday on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child younger than 14.
The 13-year-old victim's mother found text messages between Mendoza and her daughter in December and told officials at Hartman Middle School, the Houston Chronicle reports.
Mendoza was removed from the school at that time, KPRC-TV reports
n court Thursday, prosecutors said Mendoza had sex with the girl in the school's library and his office. A pregnancy test performed on the girl was positive.
"The defendant is believed to be the father of the unborn child," Assistant Harris County District Attorney Patrick Stayton said.
Prosecutors said there was nothing to indicate that there were other victims, KTRK-TV reported.
Mendoza, an immigrant from El Salvador who is in the U.S. legally, was released from custody Thursday after posting $50,000 bond and surrendering his passport.
