A woman who allegedly filmed herself performing a sex act on a dog claims the video is fake and she is innocent of charges brought against her, a court heard.

Amber Finney, 33, was the first person to be charged under a new bestiality law after the video was sent to a local TV news station and then to police.

She was arrested after she went into a retail pharmacy and workers at the shop recognised her as the one who had been on TV for "getting into trouble with animals", said police.

Finney - who has a paw print tattoo on her chest - has pleaded not guilty to a charge of engaging in sexual conduct with animals after claiming she was drugged and unable to recall any details.

She was arrested on Sunday night after workers at a Walgreens pharmacy in Warren, a city in the US state of Ohio, called 911 to report her whereabouts after seeing a report by TV station WKBN.

Officers who responded to the shop later found her crying in the basement of her home, said police.

Warren Police had issued a warrant for Finney’s arrest in January after a video surfaced showing a woman participating in a sex act with a dog.

After she was arrested Finney told police that the video was fake, but investigators believe it to be the real thing.

She told police she had been drugged at the time when a drink was spiked, but she could not recall any details.

Finney denied the charges as she appeared in court after being held in a county jail.

Detective Nick Carney told WKBN: “She says it is fake, but to anyone who has seen the footage, it is clear as day that it is not a fake video.”

He said bestiality is becoming more common.

Warren passed the law last summer, becoming the first city in Ohio to make bestiality illegal.

Lawmakers in Warren proposed the ban after a local man was jailed for having sex with two dogs multiple times over six years.

How was a man "jailed for having sex with two dogs multiple times over six years" if it wasn't illegal?

Maybe they got him on animal cruelty charges, then later decided that the animal cruelty statute wasn't enough in bestiality cases.

A Warren man is accused of performing sex acts on two dogs that he owns. Salvador Rendon pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty during his arraignment in municipal court on Monday. Authorities tell 21 News that the 61-year-old Ward Avenue man had sex with a male boxer and female boxer at least 10 times over the past six years. Investigators say they were tipped off to the acts by Rendon's wife, who reported him after allegedly catching him in the act several times. Rendon is charged with animal cruelty, which is a misdemeanor. Ohio does not have a law against bestiality. Ohio Senator Jim Hughes is sponsoring a bill to make bestiality illegal in the state. The measure is currently in committee. "When cases like this come to the forefront, it's an unfortunate incident, but it brings about change, because it gets people taking and it gets people calling down to Columbus and saying why is this still legal in the state of Ohio," Jason Cooke said, valley area animal activist. The charges come as no surprise to some neighbors as they continue to worry about the children who play along Ward Avenue. "There's a bunch of kids that play around here, you can't have people like that around the neighborhood," Tom Verherst said, a Ward Avenue neighbor. Rendon is being held in jail without bond while the court performs an investigation to determine if he's a flight risk. The dogs were taken to a local vet for evaluation. Police tell 21 news they have never seen a case like this one.
