TONY BLAIR hinted he could return to politics in a bid to stop Britain being “hijacked” by Brexit supporting MPs.

The former Labour prime minister shamelessly told voters not to back Eurosceptic candidates who support Britain’s departure from the European Union “at any cost”.

He claimed Britons should only vote for potential MPs in the General Election who are keeping an “open mind” about the UK’s divorce from the bloc.

The staunch Remainer made the astonishing remarks during an interview on the BBC’s The World This Weekend on Sunday.

He also railed against Theresa May’s promise for a clean break from the Brussels project, describing it as “not in the interests of the country”.

Mr Blair said: "I feel for the first time since I first came into politics, I look at the British political scene at the moment and I actually almost feel motivated to go right back into it.

"I just feel we're allowing ourselves to be hijacked by what is actually quite a small group of people with a very strong ideology.”

Speaking about the snap vote on June 8th, Mr Blair said: “What this election needs is a new dimension in it because otherwise, we’re just going to literally roll through the next few weeks.

“It needs a new dimension where we put would-be candidates and MPs under pressure to say: ‘Are you going to back Brexit at any cost, or are there circumstances in which you’re prepared to say this deal is not in the interests of the country?’”

Mr Blair, who previously told Remainers to “rise up in defence” against Brexit, argued such move would force MPs to commit to a softer Brexit stance.

He continued: “If they won’t then the voters can take that into account when making their decision.

“I personally couldn’t support somebody in an election who was going to say: ‘I’m just going to back Brexit any cost’.”

Although Mr Blair confessed he’d back Labour in the General Election, he called for a cross-party “alliance” to pressure the Government’s Brexit stance.

He said: “Whether I’m Labour or Conservatives or Liberal Democrats, I’ll work with anyone to get this argument across in the country.”

Praising Tim Farron’s fight against democratic referendum result, Mr Blair finished: “The Liberal Democrats’ position on Brexit is one many in the Labour Party would support as well.”

You gotta love these politicians who think they know what the people want, even though they voted the opposite
