A man is lucky to be alive after a gas barbecue exploded in the back of his van, leaving the vehicle a complete write-off.

Matt Hinder, 46, was rushed to hospital suffering multiple cuts from flying glass and burns to his arm after the leaking gas turned the van into a bomb.

Neighbours told how their homes, in Redland, literally shook as the massive blast ripped through the new Ford Transit this morning - blowing the windscreen 30ft up the road.

Matt, a company director at Asset Property Development, was injured after he tried to turn off the leaking gas cannister. It is not known what ignited the built-up gas inside.

The immaculate grey Transit was ripped open and left a twisted shell as the blast blew out the glass, doors and the even the roof.

Police and fire crews rushed to the scene following the blast at 7.30am to find injured Matt dazed, but lucky to have escaped with his life.

Matt, who had collected the gas BBQ ahead of a weekend rugby tour to Woolacombe, Devon, received stitches to several cuts and treatment for burns to his hand.

An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We were called by police to Cranbrook Road at 7.45am. A crew from Temple attended."

"There was one casualty, who was treated by ambulance crews."

Mr Hinder was taken to hospital to be treated but has since returned home.

Neighbour Lucy Key said: "At about half past seven I heard a big boom and the windows shook. I had no idea what was going on.

"When I went to the window, all I could see were people looking out of their homes in their dressing gowns to see what had happened. Then I heard the sirens.
"I saw the damage to the van on my way to work and it was really shocking. It was a relief that no one was more seriously hurt."http://i1.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article40062.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/SWNS_VAN_BLAST_08.jpg
