Avante-garde fashion can easily go south.

And while Pharrell's wife Helen Lasichanh won points among many fashion bloggers Twitter had its own response to her choice of attire at the Met Gala on Monday in New York City.

Wearing a Comme des Garcon full body suit with a pillowy design, which pinned her arms to her sides without outlets, the blonde certainly proved she is bold in the fashion department.

The red costume with the puffy design inspired the internet's pranksters to come out in full force.

Most popular among Twitter fashion critics was a comparison with various children's television shows.

One user compared her attire to the red couch from Blue's Clues, while many other drew inspiration from Teletubbies.

While another couldn't help but think Helen arrived dressed like a popular character from Beauty And The Beast, writing: 'Pharrell's wife wearing Cogsworth. #metgala'.

Meanwhile, Pharrell eschewed black tie dress code for a deconstructed punk look by Comme des Garcon.

Pharrell, 44, attended the event at one of the gala's co-chairs, along with Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Katy Perry, Tom Brady, and Gisele Bundchen.

He and his other half were happy to enjoy a night of glamour, taking a quick break from their bouncing baby triplets waiting at home.

Although his outfit was more casual than black tie, the punky look was by the evening's honoree Comme des Garcon.

The Grammy winner wore ripped jeans with the word 'Rei' written on them - a shout of to designer Rei Kawakubo. He teamed the pants with low red Doc Martins.

Glitzing things up on top, the Happy singer donned a handsome leather jacket adorned with funky pins.

Wife Helen Lasichanh took a more dramatic approach to the evening, wearing a buoyant red pantsuit which looked like equal part quilt and armor.

The crimson ensemble bubbled at the shoulders while keeping the sleeves sewn to the body of the garment like a stylish sleeping bag.

On her feet, the model-designer donned an eclectic pair of black shoes with white toes.

She piled her blonde locks on top of her head in an elegant bun while keeping her makeup simply but stunning with a bold cat eye.

The Met Gala is the highlight of the fashion calendar.

And with ground-breaking Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo's named as this year's theme, the famed fund-raiser is sure to provide plenty of spectacle.

The Tokyo-based designer has been deemed worthy of the solo focus of this year's gala - which inaugurates the museum's eagerly-awaited accompanying exhibit of her label.

It is the first time the gala and exhibit has focused on one living designer since 1983, when it highlighted the work of Yves Saint Laurent.

Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton, told AP that Kawakubo is considered the world's 'most important and influential designer' of the moment and 'has consistently defined and re-defined the aesthetics of our time.'

Known for bold, experimental clothing, Kawakubo's designs have an austere aesthetic and a cult following.

The 74-year-old officially founded her cerebral design house in 1973 to critical acclaim - and was dubbed 'anti-fashion' for challenging the notions of beauty with her innovative aesthetic.

Comme des Garcons has been showing collections in Paris each season since 1981.

The Metropolitan Museum in New York - where the annual gala is held - is displaying 120 Comme des Garçons womenswear designs by Kawakubo, spanning the past 35 years, since her first Paris show.

The glitzy bash, formally known as the Costume Institute Gala, borrows its name from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the location for the annual NYC event.

In 1946, the gala was launched, in a bid to raise money for the Met’s Costume Institute. This year's lucrative fundraiser will see less that 600 glamorous attendees appear. Tickets market for up to $30,000, while tables cost $275,000.

Guests must be personally approved by American Vogue editor and chairwoman of event, Anna Wintour, with former attendees including Madonna, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna and Kim Kardashian.
