If you have an old £5 note that you’ve been meaning to spend you better get your act together because tomorrow is your last chance.

From midnight Friday May 5 the old fiver will be withdrawn from circulation and will no longer be accepted in most shops.

Since the new £5 Sir Winston Churchill notes were introduced last September, the old Elizabeth Fry notes have steadily been withdrawn from circulation.

The good news is all Bank of England notes remain payable at face value for all time, however, you may be very limited in how you can use them after they are withdrawn.

What happens if I still have a paper £5 note after May 5?

If you balls up and still have a paper £5 note on Saturday then all is not lost.

Retailers, banks and building societies may still accept the notes, however, it is up to them if they want to.

Either way, you’ll still be ok.

The Bank of England will always exchange old-series notes.

You can either do this in person or, if you’re not so bothered, you can send them at your own risk to:

Dept NEX, Bank of England, Threadneedle Street, London EC2R 8AH

Will I need to provide ID to exchange the old fivers?

You might need to if you’re exchanging large values. It’s best to check before you swap if this is required.

For more information on exchanging visit the Bank of England website.

When will the other notes change?

The Bank of England will issue the new £10 note, which features Jane Austen, in September. It will unveil the design on July 18 to mark the 200th anniversary of the writer’s death.

The new £20 note will be introduced by 2020, while there are no plans to replace the current £50 note.
