A 27-year-old Oregon woman was arrested for an alleged sex trafficking attempt involving a 3-year-old child.
Kelsey Christine Wheeler made her first appearance in U.S. District Court in Portland on Monday, KATU News reports.
The FBI arrested Wheeler last week after investigating a possible sexual encounter case between her, a child and a Eugene, Ore. man.
Police interviewed the man earlier in April, and he said he’d met with Wheeler after responding to a sex ad online in January.
Court documents suggest that Wheeler — under an alias — offered an “encounter” with a young child close to her, for $1,000.
Wheeler told police that she has worked as a prostitute since age 15 and denied offering a toddler for sex, KATU News notes.
On the topic of the encounter, Wheeler said he offered her $6,000 for a “mother-daughter” experience, the site adds.
Child Protective Services reportedly investigated Wheeler in Las Vegas after the woman, the child and a man were found, minimally clothed, inside a hotel room.
U.S. District Judge John V. Acosta waived Wheeler’s preliminary hearing on Monday and appointed federal defender Susan Wilk to the case.
A grand jury is likely to have reviewed the case by May 9, and a May 11 arraignment has been scheduled, KATU News concludes.
