TEHRAN, Iran -- A senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander claimed on Tuesday that his country has the ability to produce even longer range missiles than those currently in its arsenal.

But Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Guard's Aerospace Force, stressed that Iran will not manufacture such missiles because Israel and U.S. bases in the Gulf are already within its reach.

The remarks came as Iran is conducting 10 days of war games, its latest show of military force amid a standoff with the West over the country's controversial nuclear program.

Hajizadeh said the Guard's arsenal already includes missiles with a range of about 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers) -- putting Israel, U.S. bases in the Persian Gulf and parts of southeastern and eastern Europe within Iran's reach.

The missiles, he said, were specifically designed for Israeli and U.S. targets. Iran's known missiles of such range are the Shahab-3 and the Sajjil. Iran considers Israel and United States its top enemies.

"There is no threat from any country to us other than the U.S. and the Zionist regime," Hajizadeh was quoted by the semiofficial Fars news agency. "The range of our missiles has been designed on the basis of the distance to the Zionist regime and the U.S. bases in the Persian Gulf region."

Hajizadeh said Iran "possess the technology" but will not manufacture missiles with a range over 1,250 miles. He gave no details. "We have no intention to produce such missiles."

In Israel, Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor denounced Hajizadeh's remarks.

"This new Iranian bragging demonstrates once again the aggressive policies of the ayatollahs' regime," Palmor said. "Not that we had any doubts prior to this statement. But this renewed threat makes it obvious why Iran is the No. 1 threat to this whole region and beyond."

Western intelligence reports say Iran is seeking to acquire the capability to produce inter-continental missiles with a range of up to 3,750 miles (6,000 kilometers), a claim Iran has denied.

Hajizadeh said some U.S. bases in Iraq and Afghanistan are as close as 75 miles (120 kilometers) from Iran's borders and can easily be hit by Iran in case of an attack.

The powerful Guard, which is in charge of Iran's missile program, kicked off the war games on Monday by unveiling an underground smart missile silos for the first time, claiming that medium- and long-range missiles stored in them are ready to launch if Iran was attacked.

The silos are widely viewed as a strategic asset for Iran in the event of a U.S. or Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities.

As part of the exercise, Iran on Tuesday also fired 14 missiles, including Shahab-1, Shahab-2 and Shahab-3 as well as Zelzal missile.

Iran remains locked in a standoff with the West over its nuclear program, which the U.S. and its allies suspect is aimed at developing atomic weapons. Iran rejects the charges, and says the program is only for peaceful purposes.

That's exactly what I was thinking. We can hit any person/place/thing on the planet and they are boasting a range of a couple thousand miles? Silly Iran.

Better bring US troops home and clean the fucking sand out of guns and gearboxes for a few years. Looks like these pricks want a war :wha:

If we do, we oughta really take the gloves off and hit these mother fuckers like the fist of god for being such an asshole... Fuck the media... Just Beat shit DOWN....

I'm sure it would be something like the beat-down Tom Clancy envisioned in The Bear and the Dragon. Innumerable types of new American technology against a traditional standing army would utterly massacre one like Iran's, all caught on high-res cameras for commanders to enjoy from home.

We use so much restraint in these wars.... Imagine what would happen in the "war on terror" if we used the same ' no holds barred' tactics that Al Queda used...

For sure. Marcus Luttrell learned that first hand if you want to read a good book with an undertone of what being too restrained does :wha:

The war on terror is different too, it's just the wrong war for America; can you even win that kind of fight? Not that any sane person wants that war if it can be avoided, but Iran could experience unrestrained war and it would be something else

And that's exactly the reason we've been stuck in Iraq and Afghanistan for 10 years....we have to be careful to make sure we don't hurt someone's feelings because then they will hate us. Oh wait, they all already hate us to begin with

Level the fucking country if they don't comply and then GTFO

How COULD you win that war? There is no point of completion, unless its when all "terrorists" have been eradicated. Good luck with that.

The government loves fighting endless Wars. It gives them a reason (a bad reason) to keep spending money like it's going out of style.

Calculate the total amount of money spent on the War on Drugs and Terrorism and it's over 10% of our national debt.

It also gives them the ability to use fear to take away our rights under the guise of national security

not everyone hates you............you do have lots of friends in the middle east...............you also have an awful lots of other friends around the world........we might not agree with you but that dosnt mean we hate you......if your military did it properly with moab's/carpet bombing/instant sunshine america really would lose an awful lot of 'special relationships' and it really cant afford to do that, becoming the pariah of the world for real

of course............its good for business...............the military industry gets funding to build ever better stuff, which it can sell on the worlds market for lots of moolah.....and a war is the perfect showcase to sell them...............and if the military industries are making stuff they are hiring people and paying taxes.....both things which the govt like

When countries issue heavy handed statements like "Our Missiles Can Hit U.S. Bases"...and then backtrack all over the place with subsequent statements...'we only make missiles with a range of 1250 miles'
It's no wonder countries like the US silently roll in and display firepower like Antz mentions...the original statement by Iran is equivalent to - We can hit your bases in the Persian Gulf and can do more if inclined...

to me that's a direct threat when discussing missile borne weapons

 Seriously? Obama already dropped that ball in 2009 and supported Ahmadenijad and the mullahs. Sorry democracy, maybe next time - the "#1 democracy in the world" has a "leader" that doesnt know his ass from his elbow when it comes to anything aside paying back everyone he owes for his gift of the presidency. Doesnt have an inkling of the power some supportive words would have given the opposition over there.
