According to his representative, rocker Chris Cornell, who gained fame as the lead singer of Soundgarden and later Audioslave, has died at age 52.

In a statement to The Associated Press, Brian Bumbery says Cornell died Wednesday night in Detroit.

Bumbery called the death "sudden and unexpected" and said his wife and family were shocked by it. The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy.

Cornell was best known for fronting the two iconic bands and singing 'You Know My Name', the theme song for James Bond film Casino Royale. He was scheduled to play the US festival Rock the Range in Columbus tonight.

He was reportedly performing with Soundgarden gig last night at Detroit's Fox Theatre, part of the band's North American headline tour. Pictures have emerged on Twitter from the concert.

Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Cornell was one of the chief architects of the grunge movement, forming Soundgarden alongside guitarist Kim Thyail and bassist Hiro Yamamoto in 1984.

Soundgarden were famously the first grunge band to sign to a major label (A&M in 1988), paving the way for the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains to break out.

After initially breaking up, Cornell formed Audioslave with Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk. Cornell left the supergroup in 2007 to concentrate on solo material before regrouping with Soundgarden in 2010.

I am so floored. I didn't like his political views but he and Soundgarden was my absolute favorite out of the big 4.

3 out of 4, man. Kurt, Layne... now Chris.

Eddie Vedder might want to enter some kind of protection program.

Just heard this on the radio, gutted :sad2: Saw him live in Glasgow last year and was keeping an eye out for when he'd be coming back on another solo tour. One of the greatest rock vocalists of this generation :rip:

Soundgarden swung by Jacksonville last month but I couldn't get anyone to go with me so I didn't go. Now I'll never get to see them play live. That's the last time that happens. Fuck everybody else, I'll just go by myself from now on.

DETROIT - Rocker Chris Cornell has died at age 52 in Detroit.

Cornell performed to a sold out crowd Wednesday night at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.

The rocker was staying at MGM Grand in Detroit where he was found dead after the show.

Sources tell Local 4 Cornell's wife called a family friend and asked him to check on the singer. That friend forced open the hotel room door where Cornell was found dead in the bathroom with something around his neck.

Sources said it appears to be a suicide.

Cornell gained fame as the lead singer of Soundgarden and later Audioslave. In a statement to The Associated Press, Brian Bumbery called the death "sudden and unexpected" and said his wife and family were shocked by it.

The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy.

Cornell tweeted this Wednesday before his Detroit show:

I don't consider STP one of the big 4 of the Seattle Grunge scene, but whatever.

If you want to include the full alternative scene: Andy Wood (Mother Love Bone), Shannon Hoon (Blind Melon), Cobain, Staley, Weiland, and Cornell. That's all I can remember from the alternative era, and it's one helluva vocal section. If you want to include instrumentalists, then off the top of my head: Hillel Slovak (guitar Red Hot Chili Peppers), Doug Hopkins (guitar Gin Blossoms), Mike Starr (bass Alice In Chains)... I can't remember if any drummers from the 90s era have passed. The 90s was a helluva fun time, but the icons aren't proving to have very good longevity. I think one of Widespread Panic's original guitar players passed a while back, but they weren't exactly alternative.

That's all I can remember right now.

I was gonna list Hoon as well, but didnt want to over complicate things..

A lot of these guys fell because of drugs. It'll break my heart if Cornell died due to drugs, or committed suicide while high, since he's been very vocal about beating his past drug addiction... and frankly, a lot of the guys on the above list were his friends and they all died due to drugs.

Him and Staley for me. Cornell probably edges Layne out since I was a bigger fan of Soundgarden's music.

He did an acoustic tour last year, i went to see him at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall - i can say without any doubt that it was the finest vocals i've ever heard live......... and i've been to a shitrake of gigs over the years!

Us Weekly Staff Report

Chris Cornell’s cause of death has been ruled a suicide, the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to Us Weekly in a statement. The Soundgarden frontman died on Wednesday, May 17, after performing a sold-out concert with the band in Detroit.

“The Medical Examiner’s Office has completed the autopsy on 52-year-old Chris Cornell, the Soundgarden musician who died last night in Detroit,” the statement reads. “The cause of death has been determined as suicide by hanging. A full autopsy report has not yet been completed. There is no additional information at this time.”

Cornell’s rep, Brian Bumbery, said in a statement to Us that the rocker’s death was "sudden and unexpected."

A Detroit police spokesperson told Us that a family friend found Cornell on the bathroom floor in his room at the MGM Grand Hotel. Hours before his show with Soundgarden, Cornell tweeted in excitement about his gig in Motor City. "@Detroit finally back to Rock City!!!!" he captioned a picture of the Fox Theater's marquee.

Aside from Soundgarden — which he cofounded with guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Hiro Yamamoto in 1984 — Cornell worked with members of Pearl Jam on their project Temple of the Dog. He also lent his talent to supergroup Audioslave, which he joined in 2001. Cornell is survived by his wife, Vicky, and three children.

If you or anyone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 to be connected to a local crisis center for confidential emotional support.

Chris Cornell had apparently taken more than Ativan before hanging himself, because we've learned he had fresh track marks on his arm when his body was discovered in a Detroit hotel room.

Sources connected to the investigation tell us ... the track marks were "obvious." The singer had a history of using drugs. The toxicology tests will reveal what drugs were found in Chris' system.

The new information is consistent with our story that Ted Keedick, Chris' longtime house engineer and tour manager, said Chris seemed "high" and "f***ed up" during the concert ... hours before his death.

Chris' wife has said her husband had told her he took "an extra Ativan or two."
