DEVELOPING – One person was in custody and at least 13 people were injured after a speeding car jumped a curb and injured several people in New York's Times Square on Thursday afternoon.

The FDNY said 13 people were being treated for injuries, and Reuters reported one person had been killed. The FDNY would not confirm any deaths.

An NYPD source confirmed to Fox News that an unnamed individual had been taken into custody in the incident.

Several buildings in the area were reportedly on lockdown as police swarmed the busy intersection, which is heavily populated with tourists. Numerous blocks had been taped off by police around the scene.

Authorities have not yet said if the car was intentionally driven into a crowd or if the incident was accidental in nature.

A maroon sedan could be seen in multiple photos upended at the corner of 45th Street and Broadway. The FDNY received the first emergency call just before noon.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo tweeted that he was en route to the scene.

One woman is dead and 23 others injured after a car sped on to a pavement in New York City's Times Square, the fire department says.
The 26-year-old driver, a former US armed service member and US citizen, is in custody.
"There is no indication that this was an act of terrorism," said New York Mayor Bill De Blasio.
The red Honda jumped the kerb at 45th Street and Broadway during lunch hour.
Photos showed the sedan partially on its side on the pavement with smoke and flames spewing from the bonnet.

The crash follows recent deadly car-ramming attacks in London, Berlin and the French city of Nice.
The FBI is investigating the New York incident, but so far officials say there is no terror link.
NYPD said the suspect, Richard Rojas, is a Bronx resident who has previous arrests for driving while impaired, a charge often linked to drug or alcohol use.
"It is believed to be an isolated incident, it remains under investigation," the New York Police Department said on Twitter.
Witnesses said the vehicle drove at high speed against traffic before hitting the kerb and ploughing into pedestrians.

On a serious note, I've wondered why this doesn't happen more often.

We had one up here during a New Years eve and it was discovered the driver hit relatives and friends of an ex girlfriend, as well as the ex. Completely premeditated and not random.
