A man who was found with a six-kilo stash of cannabis claimed he was going to binge-smoke the whole thing.

Edward Buchan, a 38-year-old from Barwell in Leicestershire, was arrested on June 30 last year after being found with a suitcase full of the drug.

He initially claimed he had paid someone £1,000 for the cannabis, and that he was planning to smoke it all in one go after his mother’s death.

However, he later told officers that he had actually accepted £1,000 from the owner to look after the cannabis for a short period of time, and that he was planning to give it back.

Buchan was handed a 16-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, at Leicester Crown Court on Friday. He was also ordered to attend a five-day rehabilitation, and to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work. He has also been placed on a three-month curfew, meaning he has to be home between midnight and 5am.

Mitigating for Buchan at an earlier hearing, Mara Silva-Romefort said: ‘There’s no way he was dealing in drugs. There’s no mobile phone evidence to suggest he was a dealer. He accepts he was a user of cannabis.’

She added at the sentencing that he was mourning his mother’s death when he was found with the cannabis, and that he now had a job in Cardiff and was on the road to improving his life.

That's a reasonable approach by the court.
