A family in the US got a startling taste of Aussie wildlife when a mother found “one of the largest spiders in the world” in her 21-month-old son’s room.
Lilian Duke was in her son’s bedroom when she spotted a massive spider which found itself very far from home, WXYZ reports.
“I looked over thinking it was a big ball of string and it turned out it had eyes and it was a big spider,” said Duke.

She called her husband and parents for help before dropping a heavy stack of books on it.
Confused about the origin of the arachnid, Duke took the carcass to a local pet store that specialises in spiders.
There she was told that this spider was no local.

“[It’s an] Australian Huntsman Spider, which would be one of the largest spiders in the world,” said employee Randy John Lee.
Duke still has concerns about how the spider got into her apartment, while it remains a mystery how an Aussie native was in the US to make this scary impression on the family.
“This thing is huge. It needs a leash,” Duke added.
