AN explosion in Melbourne, Australia, has been heard in a hostage situation at a block of apartments in the Brighton area, where two men have been killed and two police officers have been shot and are injured.

The guman is dead as well as another unknown man and two police officers were injured after they were shot during the hostage incident.

One man kept a woman hostage inside a Melbourne apartment, where a loud explosion had been heard earlier.

Two police officers who were trying to get into the apartment have been shot and are injured.

A massive explosion was heard in Bay Street, Brighton, and specialist units are investigating the incident.

Thirty or forty rounds of gunfire have been heard at the scene of the hostage situation.

Victoria Police have said that they are investigating whether the incident is related to terrorism.

A phone call was made to 7 News Melbourne saying: “This is for IS.”

According to the Australian Herald Sun, the gunman is known to counter-terrorism police.

According to the statement from the police, they located the body of a man who was shot in the foyer of the building.

The police force said earlier: “Police are currently at the scene of a shooting and hostage situation in Brighton this evening."

They said: “Police are attempting to negotiate with a man in one of the apartments. It’s believed he has a woman inside with him who he won’t allow to leave.

“Victoria Police specialist units are currently on scene. Roads are closed in the vicinity and we urge the community to avoid the area”.

Victoria Police have tweeted: “Police have resolved a hostage situation in Brighton shooting a man dead and rescuing a woman being held against her will.”

People living in the area were forced to flee for safety to a nearby supermarket.

Witness, Jack Reid, said: “I was standing on the corner across the road,

“I saw police pull out their guns, I heard about three dozen gun shots. I got really scared and ran across the road. Police were telling everybody to get into the Coles supermarket so me and mates just ran.”

According to police, the woman is being held inside the apartments on the corner of Male Street and Bay Street.

Emergency services were called just after 4pm local time.

Witness Ben Vieth said: “Next minute we heard the machine gun go off,’’ he said.

“It was absolutely terrifying.

“It went for probably three or four seconds — just constant fire.

“The police were just screaming at people to run and take cover.

“People were just ducking and running.

“I was just in shock — I couldn’t stand up. It was full on.

“The noise was just deafening.

“It wasn’t a couple of shots. It sounded like 20 or 30 shots.”

Witnesses have said that they heard gunfire at the scene and police were telling people to get back.

Police in Victoria have asked people to avoid the area.

Another witness said: “Undercover police got out, put vests on and went running up the street.”

Police have closed roads in the area and have warned people to avoid the area.
