ISIS on Wednesday claimed responsibility for a pair of attacks in Tehran that included suicide bombers and teams of gunmen who stormed Iran's parliament and the nearby shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Two security guards were killed and 30 other people were injured in the rare twin attacks, with the siege at the legislature still underway.

SITE Intel Group reported that this is the first attack orchestrated by ISIS in the country.

One of the attackers blew himself up inside the parliament building, where a session had been in progress, according to a statement carried by Iran's state TV. It quoted lawmaker Elias Hazrati as saying the attackers were armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles.

An Associated Press reporter saw several police snipers on the rooftops of buildings around the parliament. Shops in the area were shuttered, and gunfire could be heard. Witnesses said the attackers were shooting from the fourth floor of the parliament building down at people in the streets below.

"I was passing by one of the streets. I thought that children were playing with fireworks, but I realized people are hiding and lying down on the streets," Ebrahim Ghanimi, who was around the parliament building when the assailants stormed in, told The Associated Press. "With the help of a taxi driver, I reached a nearby alley."

Police helicopters circled over the parliament building and all mobile phone lines from inside were disconnected. The semi-official ISNA news agency said all entrance and exit gates at parliament were closed and that lawmakers and reporters were ordered to remain in place inside the chamber.

State TV reported four attackers are involved in the parliament attack, and said eight people were wounded.

Iran's official state broadcaster said a security guard was killed and four people wounded in the shrine attack. It said one of the attackers at the shrine was killed by security guards and that a woman was arrested. It described the shrine attackers as "terrorists" and said one carried out a suicide bombing, without providing further details.

In addition to being lethal, the attack on the shrine of Khomeini is symbolically stunning. As Iran's first Supreme Leader, Khomeini is a towering figure in the country and was its revolutionary leader in the 1979 ouster of the shah.

Why would ISIS attack Iran?

From a story in The Guardian:

Isis, which adheres to a puritanical strain of Sunni Islam, considers Shias heretics and has carried out numerous attacks against Shia civilians, in Iraq in particular. But this assault, which appeared to have a higher degree of coordination and planning than recent Isis-claimed attacks in Europe, would be a significant escalation.

...

Isis published a rare video in Persian in March, warning that it “will conquer Iran and restore it to the Sunni Muslim nation as it was before”, while accusing Iranians of persecuting Sunnis over the centuries.

From a story in The Guardian:

Same crap as Iraq. I would say it's their issue to sort out, but of course, the world gets floods of refugees once these idiots get their hands on some nice weapons that actually kill a lot of people.

The Iranians are much more moderate and progressive than most in the West give credit for. Iranians are primarily Shia, who only make up about 10% of the global Muslim population (most being Sunni).

It's too bad the Iranian government spent so many years blowing smoke. They'd make much better allies than the Saudis who they hate. They recent called out the Saudis for funding ISIS which very well could be true.

I saw a chart online recently of 'what country does each country fear most' and I think the US, Canada & UK were the only Western ones that primarily said Iran. I wonder if that's slowly shifting though?

Is it propaganda that Saudi support is wealthy citizens while Iranian support is government?

Ya that's an interesting point.. Iran has been blamed for a lot of state sponsored terrorism no doubt. They seem to prop up al-Qa’ida and some Shia terrorists, but hate ISIS (then again we've done literally the same shit). The whole thing is a clusterfuck. Seems to me like the Saudis are pouring more gas on the fire but nobody is innocent.

'Travel the world on shoestring' types often cite Iranians as the most friendly people on earth (and their favourite travel destination)

Interesting, I'll have to check out some episodes.

I've heard similar though. Their society is far closer to ours... still lots of beheadings... but no constant calls to prayer, more open/secular society, gender equality (not SJW shit  just meaning they can actually own a business and travel without a man). I can tell you first hand the Iranian immigrants I went to school and work with are good people, despite being a bit more serious (anecdotal). Fun fact, Tehran was the only middle eastern city where citizens spontaneously gathered after 9/11 to hold vigils. And best of all, they loath Sunni terrorism just like the West
