Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that it is his 'duty' to stop gay people from getting married in an attempt to 'reinforce families' because same-sex couples 'will not produce any children'.
In a series of interviews with American film director Oliver Stone, Putin explained his views against same-sex marriage and his belief that he has to 'uphold traditional values'.
He said: 'And I can tell you this, that as head of state today, I believe it's my duty to uphold traditional values and family values. But why? Because same-sex marriages will not produce any children.
'God has decided, and we have to care about birth rates in our country. We have to reinforce families. But that doesn't mean that there should be any persecutions against anyone.'
Putin also rallied against same-sex adoption in the interview, saying it's better for children to grow up in 'traditional' households.
'I cannot say that [gay adoption] is welcomed by our public,' he told Stone. 'I say this frankly. As in my view, children will have a freer choice when they become adults if they grow up in a traditional family.'
The Russian president also insisted that gay people do not face persecution in the country, saying Russia is 'rather liberal'.
'There is no situation like in some Muslim countries where homosexuals face death penalty,' he said. 'We have no restrictions or harassment based on gender. Moreover, many people explicitly talk about their non-traditional sexual orientation.
'We maintain relations with them and many of them achieve outstanding results in their activity… they even get state awards and orders for their achievements.'
Putin defended the country's controversial law on banning dissemination to minors of 'propaganda' legitimizing homosexuality, saying 'the reasoning behind this law is to provide children with the opportunity to grow up without impacting their consciousness'.
Although there is widespread animosity toward homosexuality in Russia and authorities regularly deny gay rights activists permission to rally, Putin said 'our society is liberal-minded to a great extent.'
After Putin noted that there is no formal prohibition of gays in the military, Stone asked if Putin would take a shower on a submarine with a gay crewman.
'I prefer not to go to the shower with him. Why provoke him?' Putin said. 'But you know, I'm a judo master and a SAMBO master as well.'
Stone conducted the interviews with Putin between 2015 and 2017.
The interviews were first shown on the US cable channel Showtime in four parts earlier this week.
