I sold almost everything I had left at a reasonable profit a couple months ago. Held some cash in a Vancouver-based exchange until a couple weeks ago and withdrew it. Glad I did. With the bottom now totally falling out who knows how stable the exchanges even are.

I'm not totally opposed to re-investing at some point but not right now.

OK What the fuck.

I don't know where to start. One of the main 2-3 crypto sites I've used the last couple years before mostly bailing from the game was QuadrigaCX. I hop on there to check the markets too just to see how they're doing. Today the website just down, and says

Dear Customers,

An application for creditor protection in accordance with the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) was filed today in the Nova Scotia Supreme Court to allow us the opportunity to address the significant financial issues that have affected our ability to serve our customers. The Court is being asked at a preliminary hearing on Tuesday February 5 to appoint a monitor, Ernst & Young Inc., as an independent third party to oversee these proceedings.

For the past weeks, we have worked extensively to address our liquidity issues, which include attempting to locate and secure our very significant cryptocurrency reserves held in cold wallets, and that are required to satisfy customer cryptocurrency balances on deposit, as well as sourcing a financial institution to accept the bank drafts that are to be transferred to us. Unfortunately, these efforts have not been successful. Further updates will be issued after the hearing.

They had $190 million of Canadian customer's money. Their site is gone. The CEO died under what I would call mysterious circumstances - he was traveling in India and allegedly died 'from complications related to crohn's disease (which a) Isn't usually fatal and b) nobody with this disease serious enough to be fatal goes to India). There is no death certificate, obituary, etc., just his wife tweeting that he's dead. He also signed a will 2 weeks before he died and his social media is wiped from the internet.

This company it came out late last year also had some involvement with a sketchy Mexican dude and CIBC froze their assets for a while because they knew something was up.

I think I still had about $250 just sitting on the site in Canadian cash I meant to withdraw. I won't see that again but I won't lose sleep over it, that was pure gains and I should've known better.

This was supposed to be a fairly stable, Vancouver based currency exchange but now it's turning into a future Netflix documentary

What a way to wake up to this news. Welp this is why they say if you don't hold your own keys, you don't actually own your crypto.

Janet Yellen suggests 'curtailing' cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, saying they are mainly used for illegal financing

Treasury secretary nominee Janet Yellen has suggested lawmakers should "curtail" the use of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, saying she is concerned that they are "mainly" used for illegal activities.

Her comments come amid a surge of interest in Bitcoin, with its price soaring around 300% in the last year. The Bitcoin price was last down 7.59% to $34,183.57, while rival cryptocurrency Ethereum's price was down 9.74% to $1,259.97, after hitting an all-time high of more than $1,430 yesterday.

But the comments from Yellen suggest the incoming administration of Joe Biden could be hostile to cryptocurrencies and attempt to ramp up regulation. Watchdogs around the world, from the European Central Bank to the UK's financial regulator, have recently expressed concern over cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

Senator Maggie Hassan yesterday asked Yellen about the dangers of terrorists using cryptocurrencies during the latter's Treasury confirmation hearing.

Yellen said: "You're absolutely right that the technologies to accomplish this change over time, and we need to make sure that our methods for dealing with these matters, with terrorist financing, change along with changing technology.

"Cryptocurrencies are a particular concern. I think many are used - at least in a transaction sense - mainly for illicit financing.

"And I think we really need to examine ways in which we can curtail their use and make sure that money laundering doesn't occur through those channels."

Yellen's comments echoed those of ECB president Christine Lagarde, who last week said Bitcoin had been used for some "totally reprehensible money laundering activity".

Major investors also have similar worries. Warren Buffet said last year that "Bitcoin has been used to move around a fair amount of money illegally". He said investors should "go short suitcases" as criminals will no longer need them to carry cash.

Cryptocurrencies are digital currencies that have no physical form and are not controlled by a centralized authority such as a central bank. This means they are largely unregulated and untraceable, making them appealing to criminals.

Yet their advocates say the lack of central control makes them attractive in other ways. For example, they argue Bitcoin can serve as protection against the debasement of national currencies when central banks launch huge stimulus programs.

Bitcoin bulls are hugely excited by the recent jump in the cryptocurrency's price.

Paolo Ardoino, chief technology officer at crypto exchange Bitfinex, said: "The king of crypto is the base layer for an emerging alternative financial system.

"Bitcoin is providing a solid foundation for a staggering array of projects, some of which will fundamentally change the nature of money by the end of the decade." Bitcoin products include funds and options.

Yet regulators urge caution. Earlier this month, the UK's Financial Conduct Authority warned that people who invest in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum could well "lose all their money".

Well I guess you could stop the banks from allowing it to be cashed out, but I think a lot of it stays in the ecosystem, if people are willing to buy and sell goods with it, it would make it hard to stop.

I mean if you have millions and want to buy a house, it could pose an issue LOL

but, IDK how they could stop it from being accessed.

There have definitely been points when it's been very hard to fund crypo wallets in Canada because the banks don't want to deal with the tax and regulator issues around their clients buying it (especially using credit cards), but there's always a work-around. Someone will always accept Wal-mart gift cards, and you can store your currency offline on a physical crypto wallet so you can't actually be locked out of a website (you can of course lose your keys  ). The ledgers are stored on thousands, if not millions of computers world wide.

There's also big institutional money behind crypto now so I think it's a lot less likely to be fully shut down.

That said, if the US government really goes after it I do think it would cripple the value. While the appeal is supposed to be its de-centralized, anonymous nature, its value is still so volatile and closely tied to overall investor sentiment.

Make sure you keep an eye on the transfer fees. When the network is busy it can get pricey and its possible you may just want to leave it there if its small amounts. I think I have 4-500 over there still in random coins. Once you build up you would for sure want to transfer it out.

It's the same on all the Canadian exchanges, user verification is required. Such a pain. I've been procrastinating verifying my login for the best Canadian exchange because they need FOUR pieces of verification (a selfie, ID, and two pieces of other mail like electric bills). Nutty, but I've never signed up for a regular bank online - maybe it's the same?

There was some sort of 3rd party verification service where you input your name and DOB and it's supposed to let you skip the uploading of ID process, but it didn't work for me for some reason.

It shot up the next day and I said, "Shit, I better get in on this quick", signed up to Binance USA and tried to do the ID verification. For some reason, my ID verification attempts kept getting rejected.

I've been hanging around several Doge faucets via the web and on my smartphone but they are so freakin' slow. By the time I'm ready to cash out on them, Doge will be so high that the faucets won't be able to pay out, and they'll all probably be defunct.

Yeah, you dont want to keep your crypto on coinbase or paypal, if you do it is in their "wallet" you want to keep crypto in your wallet. If you only have a small amount, the transfer fess may not be worth moving, so you can leave it for a awhile until it makes sense to transfer

They have an app for PC and mobile, and they allow you to exchange one crypto for another that they support, and they support a lot. Its a small fee to trade, but that how I get all the different ones I have. I'll deposit on coinbase for LTC (has the lower transfer fees) Then transfer teh LTC to my exodus wallet, and then trade that for whatever coin I'm looking for.

Can't recommend that enough. There have been way too many crypto exchanges hacked or that were complete scams.

QuadrigaCX up here burned me for a few hundred dollars when it crumbled because the founder 'died' mysteriously in India in his 30's. It seemed like a perfectly legit Vancouver based exchange, but when the founder died, the initial story was that he was the only one in the company to have access to the keys... it later turned out the whole thing was a ponzi scheme. They should make a movie about it, people want his body exhumed and I still get emails frequently about the lawsuits

Thankfully I only used it for small transactions because it was an easy place to transfer through to get crypto into Canadian cash and into my bank for a brief time. Some people just held their crypto there and lost tens of thousands. That's why they say in crpyto: if you don't hold your keys, you don't own the crypto.

Ethereum’s 27-Year-Old Creator Is Now the World’s Youngest Crypto Billionaire

https://observer.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2021/05/GettyImages-500445690.jpeg?resize=768,512

Cryptocurrencies had another wild weekend with several popular tokens soaring to new record highs on Monday. Ether, the digital currency widely used in the booming trade of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in recent months, surged past $3,200 on Monday, making its creator, the Russian-Canadian programmer Vitalik Buterin, a billionaire.

As of Monday, Buterin’s public Ether address—which he said in 2018 is his main crypto wallet—holds about 333,500 Ether worth $1.029 billion. The self-described NFT collector Justin Trimble said on Twitter Buterin, 27, is now the world’s youngest crypto billionaire.

Buterin is hailed as one of the founding members of the cryptocurrencies and other blockchain applications we’ve come to know today. Buterin first proposed the design of the Ethereum platform in a white paper in 2013 at the age of 19, aiming to create a general scripting language to develop blockchain-based applications. Development for the first Ethereum network was crowdfunded in 2014, and the first version went live in 2015 with an initial supply of 72 million Ether coins, the native cryptocurrency of the platform.

Today, Ethereum is the most actively used blockchain. And Ether is the second largest cryptocurrency after Bitcoin by market value. Both cryptocurrencies have seen astronomical surges in 2020 and 2021 so far as the mainstream finance world, including institutional investors, embrace crypto as a legitimate asset.

Year to date, Ether has more than quadrupled in dollar value. It now has a market capitalization of $364 billion, exceeding that of Bank of America, the second largest bank in the U.S.

Last week, Buterin donated 100 Ether and 100 Maker tokens, worth over $600,000, to a COVID-19 relief fund for India.

They suck. I'm getting like .00001 or less of each coin on each claim. But, because I'm a cheap ass poor motherfucker, I refuse to buy anything except for Ethereum. I think I do have something like 200 Dogecoins because I've been using several faucets for several months. But the others are all cloud miners that drip slow. I don't expect to get anything significant out of any of them. But you never know, if I get enough of one and it takes off (except for Bitcoin, because Musk is determined to sink Bitcoin), maybe I'll get a little something that the IRS will take away from me at tax time.

Ok, all of these can be found on Google Play.

All by the same company/coder:

Eth Drain - 0.00000005 ETH per claim (x5), you can claim every 50 minutes, and you can withdraw to your wallet address at .001 ETH
Bch Drain - 0.00000004 Bch per claim (x5), you can claim every 10 minutes, you can withdraw to the wallet address you put in at .002 BCH
XRP Drain - 0.000035 XRP per claim (x5), claim every 10 minutes. Withdraw at 1 XRP
LTC Drain - 0.0000001 LTC per claim (x5), claim every 30 minutes, Withdraw at .001 LTC
BTC Drain - 0.00000001 BTC per claim (x5), claim every 83 minutes and 20 seconds, withdraw at .000043 BTC

There are ads and captchas. I can beat the ads but I get hit with a captcha pretty regularly.

I use an app called DogeCoin Faucet made by a different coder/company. It gives you 0.1 Doge per claim and you can claim it every 9 minutes and 50 seconds or so. There are ads. Also there's this thing called claim energies. You can claim 50 times in a row before your energies are depleted and you have to wait until it's refreshed. I don't know if the dude's refreshing them, or if the app refreshes the claim energies itself, because it's wildly inconsistent. You can withdraw at 100 Doge, but you've gotta wait for the deposit to your wallet. I think he does it around the middle of the month, but he does deposit your earnings to the wallet address you give in the app.

Yeah, I don't know if it's worth the time and trouble but I really don't do anything with my phone besides call and text people, and even that's few and far between. So if nothing else, I'm picking up my phone more often, and I'm getting (a miniscule amount of) free shit that may or may not be worth something someday for my trouble.

I should've listened to Porky back in 2013.

I dont have a ton into crypto, I should have had more, at least you dont lose that stuff in boating accidents like my guns & gold  I'm going to pick up more cardano whenever I finally get my tax return

but a buddy has like 18k of em and was chuckling about btc crashing the other day, cardano was up for the day. he basically got out of btc, says cardano is where the real transactional power is...if btc is 1.0 and eth is 2.0, consider that 3.0. eth is still expensive to transact with, and fuhgeddabout btc, its why musk said btc mining isnt even energy efficient at all these days. worth looking into what sorts of things people are using it for.

me, I would not bet that btc goes to 100k, ever, because its going to be more like old video tech as opposed to old audio tech ;)

So if I'm reading this right, in order to get interest off of Cardano/ada, you have to download and install their native wallet, called Daedalus, transfer your Cardano/ADA to that local wallet and then stake your tokens from inside the wallet?

You can swap and stake it through the exodus wallet. I swapped LTC for ADA on Feb 7th (at .68) and staked it on the 7th. Its currently at 2.01 and paying 4.21% interest

If you are interested in staking, ATOM is paying 8.91%, but its around $21 a coin

In a nutshell, digital currency is a common term for any asset in electronic form. Digital currency transactions might be sent all over the world. So cryptocurrency is a part of digital currency, but they have a number of special features, for example, the encryption process, decentralization, fast transactions, anonymity and etc. I have a traditional personal finance background and have a large portion of my net worth in cryptos but I understand the risk from various perspectives - personal, political, security, economic..etc. I suggest a normal person invest no more than 20% of their net worth under normal circumstances and should use a [UR]crypto bot[/URL] to buy and sell in the market. And it generates a net portfolio with different bots/strategies and manages your portfolio with professional investment strategies.

What's the deal with the SafeMoon shitcoin that Portnoy is going crazy about?

PorkChopSandwiches
05-20-2021, 04:19 PM
Its a ponzi scheme

What do critics say?
The lofty plans have some skeptics raising their eyebrows at SafeMoon, especially as the price rises.

For example, a Twitter account called WarOnRugs, which identifies itself as a "community based, grassroots movement" that aims to expose crypto scams, criticized SafeMoon last month.

"Owner owns more than 50% of the liquidity and refuses to fix it," the account tweeted. "He could pull LP and sell tokens, creating a rug pull [meaning an exit scam]. Likeliness of losing all funds: Absolute."

Crypto analyst and investor Lark Davis echoed the sentiment last month, comparing SafeMoon to BitConnect, an investment platform that ended up being a Ponzi scheme. "Remember just because you make money off of a ponzi does not change the fact that it is a ponzi," he tweeted.

LOL, IDK there are a lot of bad actors out their creating coins and a lot of money being thrown around in case they take off. I like coins that serve a purpose like ETH and ADA

I just checked my wallet, when I was mining in 2017 I was getting about .029 BTC around every 10 days. That was $102 on Aug 8 2017. That .029 is worth $1165 today

Kraken has some very advanced trading options including trading options and on margin! It has a 'beginner' 'intermediate' and 'advanced' trading interface you can select from which is super nice. They also have a lot of coins and currencies to pick from. It's been my go-to for more advanced trades for 4-5 years.

Coinbase is making cryptocurrency purchases easier with the launch of its Coinbase Card on Apple Pay and Google Pay.

According to a blog post on Tuesday, select customers on the Coinbase Card's waitlist will become eligible to earn up to 4% back in crypto rewards on purchases starting this week.

The cryptocurrency exchange operator says it will automatically convert all digital currencies to U.S. dollars and transfer the funds to a user's Coinbase Card for everyday purchases, from grocery deliveries and pet supplies to home office goods and ATM withdrawals.

Once approved, the company notes users can start spending right away, even before receiving their physical Coinbase cards. Cardholders can add the Coinbase Card to digital wallets via the Google Pay app, the Apple Wallet app or the Coinbase app.

The move comes about a week after PayPal said it was developing a withdrawal function in order to allow its users to move their cryptocurrencies into digital wallets. Shares of Coinbase rose slightly following Tuesday's announcement.

Mobile payments grew 29% year-over-year in 2020, according to eMarketer. The firm estimates that mobile payment usage is now on track to surpass half of all smartphone users by 2025.

"We project that there will be around 6.5 million new mobile wallet users per year from 2021 to 2025, of which more than 4 million will be Gen Zers," Oscar Orozco, eMarketer forecasting analyst at Insider Intelligence, said in a statement. "Millennials will continue accounting for around four in 10 mobile wallet users, although that share will shrink."

According to prices tracked by Coindesk, the world's largest cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, is trading near $35,000 per coin, while rivals Ethereum and Dogecoin are trading around $2,500 and 33 cents per coin, respectively.
