An unemployed welder on benefits has sparked outrage after telling a TV programme he has a hard time finding a job because he parties at weekends.

The man, identified only as Clive, shocked viewers as he appeared on the Channel 5 show 'Generation Poverty Gap: On Benefits'.

Rave aficionado Clive, 57, admitted that he was 'off his tree' at weekends and 'bug-eyed' on Monday mornings, making it difficult to work.

He told the programme he would have 'no bloody life' if he didn't go to raves at weekends.

Viewers were left less than impressed with his attitude, with some going on Twitter to mock or insult him, the Nottingham Post reports.

Clive's surname and home town weren't revealed in the programme.

However he was shown going to Sutton Christian Fellowship and the Lammas Leisure Centre in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.

He told the programme: "I get off me tree on a weekend and quite often I'm wide awake all of Monday.

Poor Clive is unable to work because it interferes with his social life. The DWP should be ashamed! #OnBenefits

"I don't actually go to sleep until a Monday night, and then I wake up at about 10 o'clock on a Tuesday, but that's not very good from a work point of view if they expect you to be a work at six o'clock on a Monday morning.

"So then I go in bug-eyed and then I get a phone call the next day from the agency to say there's no more work – they never say you've got the sack or anything."

He added: "I like to stomp and dance to the music. I can dance to it all night.

"Recently I have been to quite a few raves. If I didn't go raving, I'd have no bloody life.

"It's not like I'm sitting here happy as Larry."

Twitter users weren't sympathetic after watching the programme.

Just feel happy that you are paying him not to work, because, you know, it interferes with his social life
