Finally, we have a fight! After being dissected for over a year, the Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor superfight is now official. The boxing match will take place on August 26 in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena with the fighters competing at 154 pounds with 10-ounce gloves. The buildup to the fight should be a complete and total circus, but ludicrousness aside, it could be the most lucrative fight in combat sports history.

After Conor McGregor's win at UFC 205 over Eddie Alvarez in November, speculation for the mega-fight picked up again, causing social media and sports talk shows to blow up, which resulted in online sportsbook Bovada setting odds for the fight. Unsurprisingly, Floyd Mayweather originally opened as a HUGE favorite, coming in at -2250, with McGregor coming back at +950. On the day the fight became official, Mayweather’s odds were down to -800 with McGregor coming back at +500. Odds continue to move for the bout as the two fighters continue to trade insults through the media.

The interest for the fight is clearly there, but many viewed the likelihood of this fantasy fight to be more fiction than reality. “This fight is a long shot to happen, in my opinion, and McGregor is a bigger long shot if it does happen,” Bovada sportsbook manager Kevin Bradley said after odds for the fight initially opened. “Floyd has never really been hit his entire career against the baddest professional boxers in the world, so Conor will have to shock the world to even lay some leather on Mayweather.”

Early analysis from boxing pundits is that Mayweather will absolutely dust McGregor, which is a fair assessment considering McGregor has zero pro boxing experience. For what it’s worth, and it’s not very much, McGregor was an all-Ireland boxing champion during his youth.

Mayweather would bring a perfect 49-0 pro boxing record into the fight. He’s made a living off of his defensive, counterpunching style of boxing, and given McGregor’s lack of experience with bigger gloves, he’d likely have trouble landing significant strikes on Money Mayweather.

If you are looking to cash in on McGregor, however, he does have a number of factors working to his advantage. He’s younger, bigger and has incredible punching power and accuracy. A quick scan of his hit list in the UFC shows he’s put down men who’ve never been KO’d or even dropped before and an argument can be made that he has the best hands in the history of MMA. Another factor to consider is that Mayweather hasn’t fought since September 2015, which will make it 714 days between fights, so there’s no way of knowing how the prolonged layoff might affect the 40-year-old.

I'm pulling for Conor but I put my money on Floyd... except a couple bucks on a first round win by McGregor because that's my dream.

floyd on points or conor by ko... which won't happen because I doubt he'll be able to land anything hard enough

Like most I would like to see Conor knock the crap out of Floyd, only because I think Mayweather is a jackass.

People may disagree, but I think he gave Ortiz a cheap shot in their fight for the win.

Ya he's a good technical boxer and will probably try to outlast Conor for the win on points...could be a snoozefest.

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor were given an 8-ounce gift by the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Wednesday — gloves.

The Aug. 26 boxing match between Floyd “Money” Mayweather and “The Notorious” Conor McGregor at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas became even more exciting for fans with a unanimous vote by NSAC.

Officials agreed to a one-time exception to let Mayweather and the reigning UFC lightweight champion champion duke it out in 8-ounce gloves for their 154-pound bout, a weight where fights are normally contested in 10-ounce gloves.

“I am very pleased with the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s handling of my next bout today,” McGregor said on his official Instagram account. “Fair play was kept all the way through … This was handled very well and very fairly by the NSAC. I am very pleased and respect the Commissions ruling on this. 10 days until fight time.”

The decision comes two weeks after Mayweather issued the 8-ounce challenge on his Instagram account Aug. 1. Both fighters filed a request shortly afterward asking that the rule requiring them to use 10-ounce gloves be waived in this case.

Mayweather adviser Leonard Ellerbe told ESPN after the announcement that “Floyd wanted Conor to be as comfortable as possible, so there wouldn’t be any excuses.”

Mr. McGregor is considered one of the best punchers in the UFC, but he is accustomed to using that sport’s 4-ounce gloves. Heavier gloves tend to muffle the impact of punches and, for a man used to the smaller MMA gloves, they can also limit his power by slowing his hands and disrupting his timing.

“Conor has vowed he’ll knock out Floyd in four rounds. He recently corrected that and said if the commission approved 8-ounce gloves, he doesn’t give Floyd two rounds,” Mr. Ellerbe told the network. “I have no reason to believe he’s not feeling very confident, and I want him to continue to have that confident attitude.”

I bet a whack on Conor TKO'ing Loudmouth. Mayweather will quit the fight citing some technical problem and no one will be satisfied. This generates the rematch..

Dropping down to the 8 ounce gloves is definitely a help to Conor.

It's the old situation where Mayweather is a great technical fighter, but will he allow or can he take punches with force behind them?

you could tell he was fucked by round 5. Mcgregor would have done much better with a couple of fights under his belt IMO, but it was a much better fight than I was expecting

Mayweather had him figured out by the 4th or 5th round. He lost his juice. I was surprised he lasted 10. That guy's got some chin on him. If he increases his stamina and endurance, and he learns to mix up his strategy a little, he could be a serious monster in the boxing ring.

 I read a good round by round review of the fight. Some the same happened towards the end of the fight too. It's like most anticipated, Mayweather was in it for the long haul.

Something I thought was pertinent was when Mayweather said MMA fighters are used to fighting 25 minutes max and I'm going to exploit that.

Conor must be in great shape to stay in there for 10, he's got nothing to be ashamed of

LAS VEGAS -- Floyd Mayweather won the fight but Conor McGregor, his under-appreciated and widely ridiculed rival, won the night.

Losers? There were plenty. The sport of boxing. The many former Mayweather rivals who failed to put on a show of such guts against the all-time great. The boxing media, the study stream of experts, active boxers and former boxers who said McGregor did not belong in that ring. And anyone -- there were many -- who scoffed at McGregor the boxer.

In the 10th round, as McGregor wobbled and the crowd stood and the air changed, Mayweather went in for the kill. His boxing acumen and excellence -- even at age 40 -- was again beyond dispute. But even as the referee stepped in to put a stop to the fight with Mayweather officially dispatching the Irishman via TKO, a different kind of victory had been won.

This week, I wrote that to triumph McGregor didn't actually have to win the fight. He had to prove he belonged in that ring. All week long, while here in Vegas on radio row speaking with those for whom boxing is a holy thing, almost everyone outside of the UFC scoffed at the idea that McGregor could do even that much.

Loudly.

Confidently.

Over and again.

McGregor wouldn't win a round. He wouldn't land a single punch. He would embarrass himself so thoroughly that his reputation would be changed once he returned to the UFC. MMA, cute thought it was, would find some much-needed humility.

Over and over they heaved that narrative at anyone who dared suggest -- or even ask -- whether Mayweather-McGregor was not in fact something worth taking seriously.

So while Mayweather now stands at 50-0, his opponent has his own surprising record: Conor McGregor 1, Rest of the Boxing World 0.

Mayweather beat McGregor. McGregor beat everyone else associated with the sport.

That's why McGregor smiled in the ring shortly after he lost the fight. The money had always been assured, so don't pretend it was his now-bulging bank account. This other thing -- respect in the boxing ring -- was hard-earned and hard for many to believe.

McGregor won at least three rounds, and he filled T-Mobile Arena with enough nervous energy to properly shame Manny Pacquiao and Canelo Alvarez for their own lackluster performances against Mayweather.

"He's a tough competitor," Mayweather said afterward. "And I think we gave the fans what they wanted to see."

They did, but to clarify: McGregor gave the fans what they came to see -- a jolt. Mayweather, in all his methodical brilliance, was exactly what we expected. It was his opponent who turned the evening into show we hoped to see, and it was his opponent who was the real star of the spectacle that turned into a real sporting event.

"He's a lot better than I thought he was," Maywather said, echoing, well, just about everyone.

And he was still, even after the beating he took in the later rounds, pure Conor McGregor despite the loss.

"He's not that fast, he's not that powerful, but boy is he composed," the Irishman said, laughing and smiling as if he'd won the fight. "I thought it was close. They should have let me keep going. He's composed in there. You gotta give it to him."

McGregor continued: "I thought it was close. Let me go down. Let the man put me down. That's energy, that's not damage. Let me wobble back to my car. You've got to put me out. I don't know what way to feel to be honest."

Feel proud, McGregor.

Hold your head high. Know you didn't beat Floyd Mayweather, but you did take down a throng of doubters so deep and stunned that boxing itself took a knee to you Saturday night.
