As news broke of the Trump administration ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allows illegal immigrants who were brought over as children to be temporarily deferred for deportation, people responded with shock and outrage.
In a BuzzFeed piece titled, “Here’s What It’s Like To Be An Immigrant, In Six-Word Stories,” the story details: “Eighteen immigrants — from Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie to Madeleine Albright to George Takei — distill the immigration experience to six telling words.”
The problem? Some of the people included in the piece are not immigrants but rather were born in the United States such as actor George Takei.

Takei was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1937 — and it just doesn't end with Takei. Of the 18 immigrants who're featured in the article, at least four others are simply not immigrants:
Food personality Eddie Huang was born in Washington, D.C.
Mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti was born in Los Angeles.
Astronaut José Hernánde was born in French Camp, California.
Playwright David Henry Hwang was born in Los Angeles.
Once the publication realized its mistake, it put an editor's note on the article and changed the wording in the subheading from “immigrants” to “people.”

It easy to see what BuzzFeed was trying to do. It was trying to show how immigrants can, and often are, beneficial to society and the United States in response to current events.
But it undercuts its own argument when its writer fails to do a simple Google search. The same media company even published a profile on Huang, which states that he was born in the District of Columbia. People make mistakes but this was one that could have easily been avoided.
