FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. -- A 70-year-old man is dead after police said that he beat his 76-year-old wife with a hatchet before taking a chain saw to himself, WRC reported.
Police in Fairfax County, Virginia said a family member of the couple arrived at the home and couldn’t open the house’s door. When she eventually pushed it in, she saw the man beating his wife in the foyer, using the blunt side of a hatchet.

The woman, who was identified as a stepdaughter was able to rescue the victim and get them out of the home, WJLA reported.
The man, whose identity has not been released to protect the identity of his wife, followed them outside, where police said there was a struggle over the weapon.
The man went back inside and shut the door when someone called 911, police said.
As police set a perimeter around the house, one officer noticed the husband laying on the garage floor, with what were called life-threatening injuries. He later was pronounced dead at an area hospital from self-inflicted chainsaw injuries, WRC reported.
The woman was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries with cuts on the face and neck, WJLA reported.
Police said they do not have a motive for the attack, WJLA reported.
