Happy Saint Andrew’s Day to one and all, as the day of Scots descends upon us on November 30, it is custom to wish our Scottish friends well on the day of their patron saint.

Wouldn’t it be really nice to put their true inner Scotsman to the test and wish them a Happy Saint Andrew’s Day in Scottish Gaelic?

Well, here’s how..

To really get into the the St Andrew’s Day spirit you should say:

Latha fèill Anndrais sona dhut when you want to say it to one person and Latha fèill Anndrais sona dhuibh when you want to wish a Happy St Andrew’s Day to a group of people.

This is pronounced Lah Fail Andras Suna Doit and Lah Fail Andra Suna Yiv.

If this doesn’t tickle your fancy another way to say Happy Saint Andrew’s Day in Scottish Gaelic is Latha Noamh Anndra sona dhut / dhuibh.

This is pronounced Lah Neyov Andra suna doit / yiv.

You could also say this to an Irish person and they wouldn’t understand exactly what you’re trying to say, as the Scottish Gaelic language comes from old Irish.

If you wanted to say Happy Saint Andrew’s Day in Irish to one person it would be ‘Lá fhéile Aindréas sona dhuit’ or ‘Lá Noamh Aindréas sona dhuit’ as you can see the two are very similar.

Noamh is the word for Saint in Gaelic and Latha or Lá means day.

The structure of sentences in Gaelic is completely different to English, in Gaelic you are saying ‘The Day of Saint Andrew happy to you’ if you were directly translating it.

And that’s your language lesson for the day.
