RESEARCHERS who scour images for evidence of life on Mars claim to have found what they say could be a carved Sphinx-like monument on the Red Planet.

Martian Archaeology, which releases its findings in YouTube videos, has released a film showing 13 separate views of what it has called "The Pharaoh of Mars" suggesting an ancient alien civilisation could once have thrived on the planet.

The video shows a number of different views of a rock that appears to have a face at the front.

Martian Archaeology claims it resembles the ancient carvings in Egypt-like the Sphinx.

The video description states: "Thirteen views taken on different days of a Martian pyramid, as we see on Earth in Egypt, we see on Mars at Aeolis Mons, The walled city of an ancient civilisation."

The images were taken by the NASA Curiosity rover, which is a four-wheel drive droid which is currently exploring the surface of the Red Planet and beaming the images back to the space agency.

Viewers had mixed views.

One posted on YouTube: "I usually look at these types videos with skeptical eyes, and this is no exception.

"I have to say, from a distance and those angles, this actually looks pretty compelling."

Another said: "Where are the aliens?"

However, another was not convinced, saying: "Thats a nice boulder."

A fourth said: "This has been debunked already it's just shadow tricks that's all."

Sceptics say discoveries like these are just the effects of pareidolia, when the brain tricks the eyes into seeing familiar objects or shapes in textures or patterns like clouds or a rock surface.

Faces are the most common thing that our brain picks out.

It all began in 1976 when NASA's Viking unmanned spacecraft snapped an image that became known as the Face on Mars, due to its similarity to Egyptian carvings.

It was later debunked after closer-up images showed it was just an eroded rock.
