OREGON – Just the thought of pumping their own gas has sent some Oregonians into full freakout mode.

Thanks to a new law that took effect Monday, residents in some rural Oregon counties will soon be allowed to pump their own gas. Aside from that exception, Oregon and New Jersey are the only states that do not allow drivers to fill up their own tanks.

Oregon House Bill 2482 was passed in May and allows people living in Oregon counties with 40,000 residents or less to pump their own petrol.

It wasn't until Medford, Oregon TV station KTVL posted about the new law on social media that the rest of the country learned just how freaked out some Oregonians are at the mere thought of pumping gas.

Here's a sampling of the panicked comments:

Others had some fun in the comments after the Dec. 29 post went viral:

Some gas station managers told The Bend Bulletin that employees would continue delivering the same full-service treatment that customers have come to expect since self-service gas was banned in 1951.

"Our regular, longtime customers love coming here and talking to us while we pump their gas," Shelby Perkins, a cashier at a 76 gas station in Prineville, told the paper.

Perkins told the Bulletin it was quite possible that the local drivers had no idea how to use a gas pump.

Other managers said they would have employees on hand to teach drivers how to pump their gas.

Pumping gas is so hard :(

Mike Perrone tells us "it's a service only qualified people should perform."

then he adds the Argument Ender "I can't even."

compelling viewpoint :-k

I usually go to the same Esso station by my house because they have a Tims inside

Worst I've done is tried putting the diesel nozzle into my tank. Then I hear a little voice through the speaker: You might want to try the other nozzle for regular fuel, ____.

She must have been watching and she used my first name...which is plenty disarming to hear through the gas pump CB radio

I've tried to create drama there

They switched station branding from Esso to 7/11 over the summer. They didn't tell a soul, didn't change any signage, not even the shirts the workers wear.

So I'm looking at my banking online, and I see these random debits from 7/11. I hadn't been in a 7/11 for months. I get all pissy and ready to call my bank thinking someone has stolen my card info, then I realize some the dates and values are what I would usually spend at the gas station.

I storm into the gas station, ask WTF and they say the parent company has changed. I get all uppity and say - I notice your shirts still say ESSO...how about that Hmmm???? :x

Girl says - Sir, it's completely normal to change branding at gas stations without changing the name. We still get our fuel from Esso and are owned by Esso. Are you going to be okay with that?

smart ass

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few weeks ago I'm trying to pump some gas and the pump doesn't work. I finally get angry and storm in once again - WTF IS UP WITH PUMP #3??

Girl calmly says - We had to change all of our pumps to prepay because of drive-offs. So you have to either pay with a card out there, or come in here first and prepay.

I respond in a bitchy, shrill, girly voice - But that's not fair!!! What happens if I have cash like today???? (I yoink out a 20 dollar bill)

She calmly says - As I explained, you can prepay in here and then pump your gas.

I then exclaim - But you didn't even put up signs!!! How are people to know???? I used to love coming here and now you've made it so complex I might have to start taking the bus!!

She's laughing pretty good at me now and says  Would you like 20 dollars gas? If you want to wait until my break I can help you with it?

Now people behind me are laughing....well played gas attendant chick, but I'll be back!!!! :x

I was joking for the most part, but I was pissed about them changing the procedure without putting up signs.

I stood there for a good 5 minutes trying to get the pump to work and it was cold out

They used to have 3 prepay pumps, 3 pay however pumps and the system worked well :x

I've been pumping my own for forty years (gas). Until this thread I was completely unaware there were entire states full of people too incompetent to perform such a menial task.

Self serve petrol stations are just about all we have in Australia and has been so for many years. Even credit card pumps are common.

I get stressed when they don't have pay at the pump  I've had to do it so few times in my life, I'm nervous I'll pay for the wrong pump. We've had pay at the pump here at almost every station for 15+ years.

I refuse to pay at the pump. I've had my credit card information stolen twice from that.

That's why you use a gas station credit card instead of a credit/debit card at the pump.

I only pay inside if I am using the debit card. Banks put ignorant holds on your cash that don't clear for many days.
