Two brothers have set up what is believed to be England's highest cafe.

Perched on a ridge near the summit of Helvellyn in the Lake District, David and Owen Holmes are selling bacon butties and a range of hot and cold drinks for weary walkers and climbers.

Student David got the idea while walking past the spot earlier this year.

It is not only the highest - but also one of the least accessible cafes in the country.

Many people have fallen to their deaths on Striding Edge, which leads to the spot chosen for the enterprise.

"I just saw the location and the idea came to me," said David who was 'holding the fort' while his brother made his descent and re-ascent from a height of 3,000ft to get more milk for the thirsty customers.

"It's been quite busy," said David. "We are just going to see whether it stays like this but we're hoping it will get busier especially in August."

Despite the effort involved in getting to the cafe (it is a two-hour slog at least), the Holmes brothers from Bristol say business was brisker than expected on their first day of business.

"It is amazing to get all this way and find something like this," said one customer.

"I brought my flask but I was more than ready for a cold drink or two."

Owen and David are camping at the foot of the mountain and plan to make the ascent each day to run their fledgling project.
