Canadian slopestyle snowboarder Mark McMorris is in the finals on tonight. Just last year he was in a devastating injury, and has made an absolutely insane recovery to make it to the games.

Americans won Gold in Slopestyle for both men's and women's.... no other country has won a gold in that even since it was introduced!

They shouldn't have ran the women's finals today though... it was extremely windy and almost everyone was crashing huge. Scary to watch.

I read that article in a magazine where he talked about how in the past he was just a lazy snowboarder, hitting the gym and watching your diet wasn't cool, but after fucking up at the last Olympics he got in with a world class trainer and got in the best shape of his life so he could continue to compete in his 30's. Absolutely dominated. So great to see him back winning the Gold. And fuck these haters and bullshitters trying again and again to bring him down.

Someone was saying that's actually a legit strategy?

Don’t blame the skater, blame the rules of short track. If a skater falls by themselves at the start then tough luck. But if a skater falls and causes another skater to fall or stumble at the start then the race is stopped and they do it again. Skaters are incentivized to intentionally cause as many problems as possible at the start if they fall. I skated at the Olympic Trials for short track, every skater learns to do this from a young age.

Edit: Regarding the was it intentional debate: Yes it is absolutely intentional to reach his hand out and grab the Japanese skater. But the Japanese skater is “ok” with it because it’s just part of the sport and it is expected, so no it wasn’t intentionally devious or unsportsmanlike.

Question and it's an old school one about the Olympics in general. Hockey players, the Dream Team basketball players...any sport that uses players from a professional team.

Aren't the Olympics supposed to be about athletes that haven't reached or been paid on the pro level? It seems so unfair to me and this is coming from a guy who has watched handfuls of NHL players play on his Canadian teams.

Something about allowing pro's from any sport makes it feel tainted in my opinion.

It used to be that the West honored the 'amateur only' rule for the Olympics. But the argument was made that the Russians and the former Warsaw Pact type countries weren't following those same rules. Not exactly who petitioned the IOC to open it up to pros worldwide, but the 1992 Dream Team in basketball was the first time I remember the pros from the United States being involved.

Yeah the Russian hockey program was so different than our system. They had (and still do) people that played on the national team as sort of a life time job slot, and they drew from that pool throughout the 70's on. We started populating our teams with pros in answer to their wonky, if not dishonest sporting system.

Not to go over old ground...but how the hell does Russia get to be in the Olympics after being banned from the games? I would drug test every one of those hockey players right down to cold medicines if I was the IOC.

I think the basic gist of it is, that the Russians appealed the ban but the IOC upheld the ban against Russia participating at the Olympics. But, they relented and let a certain group of athletes, ones that hadn't tested positive at the time I guess, to compete at the Olympics under the stipulation that they couldn't compete as Russians for Russia, that where the OAR (Olympic Athletes from Russia) came from. So while there were Russians there, technically they were not competing AS Russians.

Still BS if you ask me, especially since one of their Curlers tested positive for doping.

Yeah it is BS. For years athletes have hidden behind flags to compete and I think they should have to live in the country for a least one year as a citizen
